Lipid droplets: size matters

Microscopy, 2011
The lipid droplet (LD), an organelle that exists ubiquitously in various organisms, from bacteria to mammals, has attracted much attention from both medical and cell biology fields. The LD in white adipocytes is often treated as the prototype LD, but is rather a special example, considering that its size, intracellular localization and molecular ...

Sizes of large He droplets

The Journal of Chemical Physics, 2011
Helium droplets spanning a wide size range, NHe = 103–1010, were formed in a continuous-nozzle beam expansion at different nozzle temperatures and a constant stagnation pressure of 20 bars. The average sizes of the droplets have been obtained by attenuation of the droplet beam through collisions with argon and helium gases at room temperature.

Droplet sizes in microemulsions

Physics Letters A, 1984
Abstract A free energy expression for spherical droplets of a three component microemulsion is presented which contains contributions from the interfacial energy as well as from the interactions between droplets. The model gives an expression for the equilibrium radius of the droplets which leads directly to conditions for the existence of a droplet ...

Droplet Size of Cooling Tower Fog

Environmental Letters, 1975
Fog from cooling towers causes problems of visibility and icing along roadways adjacent to the towers; moreover, the visible plume from the towers offers difficulty in that it is equated by much of the public with air pollution. It is desirable to know the size of the fog droplets in order to plan abatement procedures and to determine the airborne ...

Integrated Microfluidic System Capable of Size-Specific Droplet Generation with Size-Dependent Droplet Separation

Journal of Biomedical Nanotechnology, 2013
Droplet-based microfluidics is receiving much attention in biomedical research area due to its advantage in uniform size droplet generation. Our previous results have reported that droplet size plays an important role in drug delivery actuated by flagellated bacteria.

Droplet Size Effects on Film Drainage between Droplet and Substrate

Langmuir, 2006
When a droplet approaches a solid surface, the thin liquid film between the droplet and the surface drains until an instability forms and then ruptures. In this study, we utilize microfluidics to investigate the effects of film thickness on the time to film rupture for water droplets in a flowing continuous phase of silicone oil deposited on solid poly(

Spatially Resolved Droplet Size Measurements

Journal of Engineering for Gas Turbines and Power, 1986
This paper encompasses initial tests of a droplet sizing technique, providing spatially and temporally resolved measurements within a liquid spray from an air assist nozzle. The method utilizes laser interferometry. The primary size measurement is based upon the signal visibility; it is validated by the peak intensity of the scattered light.

Determination of Droplet Size

PANS Pest Articles & News Summaries, 1975
Abstract Use of less liquid to apply pesticide sprays requires more detailed consideration of droplet size. This paper describes various methods of sampling spray droplets in the field, their measurement under a microscope and calculation of the number and volume median diameter of the sampled droplets.
