Standardizing Spray Droplet Size Distributions
2022An increasing number of companies and institutions have facilities that allow for the evaluation of droplet size associated with spray application from agrochemical nozzles. In response to the newly launched Council of Producers and Distributors of Agrotechnology (CPDA) Application Enhancement Program (AEP), there is an immediate need for a tool that ...

Prediction of the droplet size distribution in aerodynamic droplet breakup
Journal of Fluid Mechanics, 2022The rim and bag dynamics in aerodynamic droplet breakup are investigated experimentally and theoretically. Three main modes contribute to the breakup sizes in aerodynamic droplet breakup: the rim node, the remaining rim and the bag breakup modes. However, existing models only consider one mode and are, therefore, unable to predict the size distribution.

Size from Specular Highlights for Analyzing Droplet Size Distributions
2009In mechanical engineering, heat-transfer models by dropwise condensation are under development. The condensation process is captured by taking many pictures, which show the formation of droplets, of which the size distribution and area coverage are of interest for model improvement.

Droplet sizing using silicone oils
Crop Protection, 2001Abstract The ISO standard protocol for determining size of droplets suspended between two layers of silicone oils of differing viscosity was evaluated in experiments using a monosize droplet generator. Cross-sectional areas of 0.27-nl droplets captured in silicone oils decreased linearly with time until droplets disappeared at 26 min after ...

Interferometric techniques, which use information encoded in the Doppler burst resulting from the interaction of a particle with a two-beam interference pattern have become practical diagnostic tools for the analysis of complex, two-phase flows.

Droplet size control in liquid jet breakup
Physics of Fluids, 1996A Boundary Element Method (BEM) has been developed to investigate the nonlinear evolution of the surface of liquid jets injected from circular orifices under unsteady inflow conditions. For fixed wavelength perturbations, the model predicts the formation of main and satellite droplets. The size of the droplets is affected by changes in the perturbation

Micrometer-Sized Water Droplets Induce Spontaneous Reduction
Journal of the American Chemical Society, 2019Bulk water serves as an inert solvent for many chemical and biological reactions. Here, we report a striking exception. We observe that in micrometer-sized water droplets (microdroplets), spontaneous reduction of several organic molecules occurs, pyruvate to lactate, lipoic acid to dihydrolipoic acid, fumarate to succinate, and oxaloacetate to malate ...

Control of Droplet Size in Liquid Nanodispensing
Nano Letters, 2006In this Letter, the phenomena and parameters governing the nanoscale dispensing of liquid through an apertured atomic force microscope probe milled by focused ion beam lithography are characterized in detail. We show that the size of deposited droplets can be reproducibly defined by controlling the aperture size on the probe and the surface energies of

A full-field, time-resolved interferometric method for the characterization of sparse, polydisperse spray systems is reported. The method makes use of the angular intensity oscillations in the wide-angle forward-scatter region. A pulsed laser is used to illuminate a planar sheet through the spray, which is imaged, out of focus, from the 45°direction ...

Collecting Supercooled Cloud Droplets as a Function of Droplet Size
Journal of Atmospheric and Oceanic Technology, 1992Abstract Supercooled cloud droplets were inertially impacted onto “cloud-sieves” at a mountaintop location. The large cross-sectional areas of the sieve meshes permitted grams of cloud water to be passively collected in minutes. Each sieve was constructed from specific diameter cylindrical strands and collected all cloud droplets larger than a critical
