Swimming Droplets

Annual Review of Condensed Matter Physics, 2016
Swimming droplets are artificial microswimmers based on liquid droplets that show self-propelled motion when immersed in a second liquid. These systems are of tremendous interest as experimental models for the study of collective dynamics far from thermal equilibrium.

Droplet microfluidics

Lab on a Chip, 2008
Droplet-based microfluidic systems have been shown to be compatible with many chemical and biological reagents and capable of performing a variety of "digital fluidic" operations that can be rendered programmable and reconfigurable. This platform has dimensional scaling benefits that have enabled controlled and rapid mixing of fluids in the droplet ...

On a tweezer for droplets

Advances in Colloid and Interface Science, 2010
We describe the physics behind a peculiar feeding mechanism of a certain class of shorebirds, in which they transport their prey in droplets from their beak tips mouthwards. The subtle interplay between the drop and the beak's tweezering motion allows the birds to defy gravity through driving the drop upwards. This mechanism provides a novel example of

Atomic Force Microscopy of Emulsion Droplets:  Probing Droplet−Droplet Interactions

Langmuir, 2003
A method has been developed for attaching oil (tetradecane) droplets to the end of an atomic force microscopy (AFM) cantilever and for immobilizing droplets on a glass substrate. This approach has permitted the monitoring of droplet-droplet interactions in aqueous solution as a function of interdroplet separation.
