Dry eye is a condition of altered tear composition that results from a diseased or dysfunctional lacrimal functional unit. Evidence suggests that inflammation causes structural alterations and/or functional paralysis of the tear-secreting glands.

The medical records of 141 patients with dermatochalasis seen during the 32-month period of January 1989 through August 1991 were reviewed. Patients were classified on the basis of symptoms and mode of treatment and were examined for effectiveness of blepharoplasty in ameliorating these symptoms.

Dry eye (DED) is a multifactorial disease that results in symptoms of discomfort, visual disturbance, and tear film instability with potential damage to the ocular surface, accompanied by increased osmolarity of the tear film and inflammation. DED is a common clinical problem and is among the most frequent diagnoses in ophthalmology.

An accurate measurement of tear production is clinically important in the diagnosis and monitoring of dry eye conditions. Re-examination of the results of Schirmer test indicated that the rate of tear secretion decreased with advancing age. Fluorophotometry revealed that the tear turnover rate also decreased with age.

Understanding the dry eye would be a great deal easier if we thoroughly understood normal tear function. To date, many aspects of tear function remain poorly understood. Only when normal tear characteristics and function are fully illuminated will the treatment of tear abnormalities and ocular surface disease be remedied.

Although researchers continue to investigate the multifarious etiologic, anatomical, physiological, and pathological factors of dry eye, successful treatment remains a challenge.Dry eye prevalence is substantial across populations and the term 'dry eye' is used to describe numerous causes and varied pathophysiologies.

Over the past 20 years it has become clear that dry eye syndrome (DES) or keratoconjunctivitis sicca (KCS) is a complex multifactorial disease characterized by an immune and inflammatory process that affects the lacrimal glands and ocular surface. In this paradigm, inflammation is seen as both the cause and consequence of conjunctival and corneal cell ...
