Vibrations induced by dry friction

ARCHIVE: Proceedings of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers 1847-1982 (vols 1-196), 1963
Dry friction between two components in rubbing contact may often be the cause of vibration. This type of behaviour was investigated by means of a model apparatus comprising a disc and a cantilever. A mathematical theory for the oscillation of the system was developed: Lagrange's equations were used and the deflections were expressed in normal co ...

Simple model for dry friction

Physical Review B, 1994
The basis of dry friction is discussed using an independent oscillator model with longitudinal motion. This sample system is treated both numerically and with analytical methods. At vanishing velocity a sliding dry friction force is calculated which is smaller than the pinning force.

On the brachystochrone with dry friction

International Journal of Non-Linear Mechanics, 1975
Abstract The problem of the brachystochrone with dry friction is governed by an autonomous set of highly non-linear ordinary differential equations, which contain a small parameter μ (the coefficient of friction). Using perturbation technique an approximate solution is constructed.

Brownian Motion with Dry Friction

Journal of Statistical Physics, 2005
In typical molecular collisions-motivated situations, the phase-space Brownian motion is considered to be randomly driven by white noise and tamed by friction which is proportional to the velocity of the particle. Other frictional forces are known to appear in the study of macro- and posssibly meso(nano)scopic materials, where the so-called Coulomb ...

Surface roughness and dry friction

Physical Review E, 2012
Persson's multiscale contact mechanics theory combined with a multiscale Brillouin-Prandtl-Tomlinson model is used to show that on the basis of these models "dry friction" [i.e., kinetic friction that remains at exceedingly small velocities (but still above the creep range) close to its value at higher velocities] should almost always occur for self ...

Dry friction in micromagnetics

IEEE Transactions on Magnetics, 1991
Dry friction is introduced into the Landau-Lifshitz equations. Numerical simulations show sustained motions or transitions to rest in a critical state. Hysteresis and Barkhausen noise can be modeled with simple structures. Dry friction in the Landau-Lifshitz equation can be a useful element in the modeling of ferromagnets. >

Modelling of Dry Friction

2004
Dry friction plays an important role in the dynamic behaviour of mechanical systems. Mechanical systems can come to rest in a finite time due to the presence of dry friction. Moreover, dry friction is also responsible for stick-slip vibrations, which occur for instance in brakes, wheel-rail contact and bowed instruments such as violins.

Nonlinear Oscillations in a System with Dry Friction

International Applied Mechanics, 2005
In the paper a case when the right-hand part of motion equations is discontinuous is considered. Attraction in the stagnation zone only ensures the existence of a periodical oscillation mode. Sufficient stability conditions are established for periodic solution of nonlinear system with dry friction.
