Dry Sliding Friction

1978
The object of this chapter is that the student shall be introduced to the nature of dry sliding friction and is able to appreciate the ejects of dry sliding friction.

Thermal and thermomechanical effects in dry sliding

Wear, 1984
Developments in the study of interrelated thermal and mechanical phenomena in sliding systems are reviewed. The topics reviewed include mechanisms of frictional heating and the distribution of heat during sliding friction, the experimental measurement and analysis of surface and near-surface temperatures resulting from frictional heating, thermal ...

Modelling sliding wear: From dry to wet environments

Wear, 2006
Corrosive species in various forms exist widely in the environment and can significantly affect wear behaviour of materials, usually accelerating wear. Under conditions where the environments are seemingly non-deleterious in terms of corrosivity, some species from the environment can still affect the tribological behaviour of materials.

Dry sliding wear of diamond materials

Wear, 1982
Abstract In pin-on-disc tests, diamond composites, consisting of diamonds imbedded in a silicon matrix, were run against themselves in air at a sliding speed of 125 cm s −1 and for loads up to 3.6 kgf. In addition, a few experiments involving sintered diamond compacts rubbing against a rotating metal ring in a ring-and-block configuration were ...

Sliding on Clean (Dry) Surfaces

1998
Around 1940 Bowden and Tabor presented a simple theory for the origin of the sliding friction for clean surfaces [6.1]. They assumed that the friction force is the force required to shear cold-welded junctions formed between the solids.

Estimation of Flash Temperatures in Dry Sliding

Proceedings of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, Part C: Mechanical Engineering Science, 1984
The paper develops expressions for the flash temperatures experienced by contacting surface asperities during dry sliding. The analysis is based on the heat transfer equations of the Jaeger—Archard theory but additional terms are introduced to allow for the effects of junction growth and cold work in plastic conjunctions.

Dry Sliding Friction Experiments at Elevated Velocities

Strain, 2010
Abstract:  An enhancement of an existing tribometer device developed by Philippon et al. (2004, Wear257, 777–784) is presented in this work. This experimental device is made up of a dynamometer ring and a specific load sensor allowing to apply an apparent normal force on specimens and to measure frictional forces respectively.

The Role of Hard Layers in Lubricated and Dry Sliding

Journal of Tribology, 1987
Lubricated and dry experiments on titanium and steel surfaces with and without TiN sputtered coatings of various thicknesses have been conducted. The significance of the layer thickness, interfacial “friction”, magnitudes of normal and tangential surface tractions, and the mechanical properties of the layer and of the substrate (e.g., elastic modulus ...
