Stress and strain during supercritical drying
Journal of Sol-Gel Science and Technology, 2018Supercritical drying avoids capillary forces, but damaging stresses can be generated during solvent exchange, pressurization, and depressurization. Each of those steps has been analyzed, so the duration of the process can be minimized without risk to the sample.

Stress and fracture during drying of gels
Journal of Non-Crystalline Solids, 1990Abstract Two models of drying are examined in an effort to explain why cracking during drying is more likely if the gel is large and the drying rate is high, often occurs at the critical point (i.e., at the moment when shrinkage stops), and frequently yields only 2 or 3 pieces.

Stress development during supercritical drying
Journal of Non-Crystalline Solids, 1992Although supercritical drying eliminates the capillary stresses that cause damage during conventional drying, there are other sources of stress and strain that can destroy aerogels. During heating in the autoclave, expansion of the pore liquid causes dilatation of the gel network.

Modeling the Influence of Drying Conditions on the Stress Buildup During Drying of Paperboard
Journal of Engineering Materials and Technology, 2006Abstract This paper concerns the drying process in the manufacturing of paperboard. Of particular interest are the effects of through-thickness property variation in paperboard during drying. In addition, resulting average properties from different drying histories are discussed.
