Regions with dry climates cover a large part of the world’s landmass (more than 40%). Collectively known by the English term "drylands", they encompass a wide range of ecosystems, including the American "deserts" of California, Nevada and Mexico ; the vast steppes of Central Asia and North Africa ; the Sahelian savannah and real deserts such as ...

Decoupling climate and human impacts on the nitrogen cycle during the Irish Bronze Age
ABSTRACT Disentangling climate variability and human activity in past nitrogen cycling is key to understanding ecosystems. Previous studies in Ireland observed a widespread, permanent shift in terrestrial nitrogen cycling during Later Prehistory, potentially linked to intensifying land‐use.

Quantifying the catchment salt balance: An important component of salinity assessments
Soil and stream salinisation is a major environmental problem because it reduces the productivity of landscapes and degrades water quality. The Berg River (South Africa) has been exhibiting a trend of increasing salinity levels, which has primarily been ...

Is quinoa‐farming sustainable in marginal environments? Social, economical and environmental aspects
Abstract Quinoa (Chenopodium quinoa Willd.) is an Andean grain crop introduced as a novel crop to many parts of the world in recent years. Recognized for nutritious seeds and high abiotic stress tolerance, it has been promoted as an element of climate‐resilient agriculture, particularly in marginal environments.

ABSTRACT Soil degradation compromises ecosystem functioning. Biochar, a carbon‐rich amendment, has gained attention as a promising strategy to enhance soil structure and restore microbial balance. This study investigated the effects of two biochars, cashew bagasse biochar (CBB) and a co‐pyrolyzed biochar produced from sewage sludge and cashew pruning ...

The World’s Drylands: A Classification
In this chapter a global overview of drylands is presented. The study region and case study areas are selected using a few simple criteria. Starting with the aridity class and degree of degradation areas were classified based on the population density and on the presence of at least one large city in the area.
