The processing delay is a serious constraint for speech communication. A one-way end-to-end delay of more than 150 ms can severely degrade the quality of real-time conversations. The components of the total system delay includes the speech frame size, the look ahead, other algorithmic delays, multiplexing delay, processing delay for computation, and ...

In this paper we explore design techniques and constraints for enabling high-speed Java-enabled wireless devices. Since Java execution may be required for 3G devices, efficient methods of executing Java bytecode are explored. We begin by setting a historical context for DSP architectures and describe salient characteristics of classical, transitional ...

Sandblaster low power DSP [parallel DSP arithmetic microarchitecture]
Proceedings of the IEEE 2004 Custom Integrated Circuits Conference (IEEE Cat. No.04CH37571), 2004General purpose processors have utilized complex and energy inefficient techniques to accelerate performance. In embedded DSP designs, power constraints have precluded general purpose microarchitectural techniques. Rather than minimize average execution time, embedded DSP processors require the worst case execution time to be minimized.

DSP for practicing engineers: an online course for continuing DSP education
2001 IEEE International Conference on Acoustics, Speech, and Signal Processing. Proceedings (Cat. No.01CH37221), 2002The recent rapid increase in applications of DSP has generated a need for technical personnel with a DSP background. Until recently, most DSP education has been at the graduate level, so many practicing engineers are developing a need for additional DSP education.

Real-time emulation of DSP applications on programmable DSPs and FPGAs
Proceedings of Third International Conference on Electronics, Circuits, and Systems, 2002The paper describes the RETIDES design flow and building blocks which allow for fast and cost-effective prototyping of complete DSP systems on heterogeneous re-usable hardware platforms consisting of general purpose DSP processors, core processors and field programmable gate arrays.

As far as the future of communication is concerned, we have seen that there is great demand for audio and video data to complement text. Digital signal processing (DSP) is the science that enables traditionally analog audio and video signals to be processed digitally for transmission, storage, reproduction and manipulation.

Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) offer an excellent platform for embedded DSP systems when real-time processing beyond that which multiprocessor platforms can achieve is required, and volumes are too small to justify the costs of developing a custom chip. There is a requirement to provide signal processing education to students who may not be from technical or engineering backgrounds, and have had little exposure to the mathematical prerequisites often associated with DSP. The author discusses the teaching of a DSP course to such students, using a minimum of mathematics, and concentrating on issues ...

HSA-enabled DSPs and accelerators
2015 IEEE Global Conference on Signal and Information Processing (GlobalSIP), 2015In this paper, we describe the Heterogeneous System Architecture Foundation's application to digital signal processors (DSP) and hardware accelerators. We provide an overview of the HSA runtime, system architecture and programmer's model, identify characteristics of DSPs and compare differences in algorithms to GPUs.
