Epigenetic blind spots – the role of DNA methylation dynamics in stem cell‐based models of embryogenesis

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Embryo‐like structures (stembryos) are an innovative tool, but they are hindered by experimental variability and limited developmental potential. DNA methylation is crucial for mammalian development, but its status in stembryo models is poorly characterized.

Audiological phenotype of siblings with dual sensory impairment caused by SLITRK6 mutation—case report

open access: yesThe Egyptian Journal of Otolaryngology
Background Dual sensory impairment (DSI), defined as concomitant hearing and vision loss, is a rare but clinically significant condition. While genetic factors account for the majority of congenital sensory impairments, dual impairment syndromes are less

pH‐mediated activation of the lysosomal arginine sensor SLC38A9

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Cells monitor nutrient levels via the lysosomal transporter SLC38A9 to activate the mechanistic target of rapamycin complex 1 (mTORC1). This study reveals that SLC38A9 function is regulated by pH. We identified histidine 544 as a critical pH sensor that undergoes conformational changes to control amino acid efflux from lysosomes; therefore, it ...

Relational strain in close social relations among older adults with dual sensory loss

open access: yes, 2019
Objectives: The loss of both hearing and vision (dual sensory loss) affects communication and potentially challenges the ability to maintain healthy social relations.

Rab14 regulates the transport of human papillomavirus to the trans‐Golgi network for infectious cell entry

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
This study reveals that the small GTPase Rab14 is necessary for human papillomavirus (HPV) infection and plays an essential role in the transport of virions to the trans‐Golgi network (TGN). HPV in the early endosome (EE), which harbors GTP‐bound Rab14, is transported to the TGN through the switch of Rab14 from its GTP‐bound to GDP‐bound form.

Third-party impact of dual sensory loss on neuropsychiatric symptom-related distress among friends and family

open access: yes, 2020
Background: Vision loss and hearing loss are common in later life and are associated with cognitive impairment and neuropsychiatric symptoms. There is a need to better understand how individual characteristics, such as poor sensory functioning, are ...

Systemic gene therapy rescues retinal dysfunction and hearing loss in a model of Norrie disease

open access: yesEMBO Molecular Medicine, 2023
Deafness affects 5% of the world's population, yet there is a lack of treatments to prevent hearing loss due to genetic causes. Norrie disease is a recessive X‐linked disorder, caused by NDP gene mutation.

The ubiquitin‐proteasome system and autophagy as guardians of the cellular proteome

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
This Perspective covers the three principles governing the crosstalk between the ubiquitin‐proteasome system and autophagy in cellular proteostasis: (1) a shared ubiquitin code routing substrates via shuttle factors or autophagy receptors; (2) spatial compartmentalization into phase‐separated degradation hubs and organelle‐specific modules (exemplified

Dual sensory loss: A major age-related increase of comorbid hearing loss and hearing aid ownership in visually impaired adults

open access: yes, 2014
Aim: Despite increasing interest in visual and hearing impairment in the older population, little attention has been paid to concurrent hearing and vision loss, also known as dual sensory loss.
