[Comparison of duck embryo vaccine and Hempt's vaccine for rabies vaccination (author's transl)].
For many years, Hempt's vaccine has been used in Germany for vaccination against rabies. In recent years the duck embryo vaccine has been gradually introduced in its place. From 1970 to 1975, 658 consultations were undertaken at the Hospital of the Tropical Institute at Hamburg because of the risk of rabies.

PROTECTIVE EFFICACY OF DUCK EMBRYO RUBELLA VACCINES
Pediatrics, 1969Merck (Benoit) strain rubella vaccine at attenuation level B in duck embryo cell culture afforded protection in all of 17 children who were intimately exposed to natural rubella in an epidemic which occurred 8 months following vaccination. Likewise, none of the children responding to Merck C and D level or HPV-77 vaccine became infected with rubella ...

† Improvements in the methods of immunizing against rabies are needed because neuroparalytic accidents are known to have occurred following the use of present methods. The use of embryonated duck eggs in place of rabbit brain for propagating the virus eliminates the myelin, which has been suspected of contributing to the nervous complications.

Incomplete transverse myelitis following rabies duck embryo vaccination.
JAMA, 1971A 41-year-old farmer developed myelitis 14 days after the first inoculation of rabies duck embryo vaccine. The patient received steroids and recovered completely. The use of rabies duck embryo vaccine carries a significantly lesser risk than that associated with the use of rabies vaccine of nerve tissue origin (Semple type).

Preparation and Testing of Duck Embryo Cell Culture Rubella Vaccine
Archives of Pediatrics & Adolescent Medicine, 1969THE SUCCESSFUL propagation in cell culture of rubella virus by Parkman et al 1 and by Weller and Neva 2 opened the way to development of a vaccine. A prime factor in acceptability of a live virus vaccine is the cell in which it is prepared, especially if the vaccine is given parenterally.
