Pathogenicity comparison of duck Tembusu virus in different aged Cherry Valley breeding ducks

open access: yesBMC Veterinary Research, 2019
Background Although several studies have revealed that the sensitivity of ducklings to duck Tembusu virus (DTMUV) was related to age, however, DTMUV was originally isolated from egg-laying ducks, and the ovary was the target organ of this virus.

Assessing Angiogenic Properties In Vitro or In Ovo of Pre‐Crosslinked Alginate‐Dialdehyde‐Gelatin Hydrogels Incorporating Boron‐Doped Mesoporous Bioactive Glass Particles

open access: yesAdvanced NanoBiomed Research, EarlyView.
This study examines the influence of boron‐doped mesoporous bioactive glass nanoparticles (MBGN) blended in cast and 3D‐printed pre‐crosslinked alginate‐dialdehyde‐gelatin (ADA‐GEL). Addition of 0.5% and 1% MBGN did not negatively affect the viability of human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs), or the sprouting of HUVEC spheroids.

Camera traps offer reliable estimates compared to ground surveys for monitoring duck pairs and broods

open access: yesWildlife Society Bulletin
Monitoring breeding waterfowl populations with ground‐based pair and brood surveys informs management and conservation decisions. However, surveys are often limited temporally and may miss individuals that are not present or available for detection at ...

Species Abundance Modelling of Arctic-Boreal Zone Ducks Informed by Satellite Remote Sensing

open access: yesRemote Sensing
The Arctic-Boreal zone (ABZ) covers over 26 million km2 and is home to numerous duck species; however, understanding the spatiotemporal distribution of their populations across this vast landscape is challenging, in part due to extent and data scarcity ...

Distribution of contaminants in the environment and wildlife habitat use: a case study with lead and waterfowl on the Upper Texas Coast [PDF]

open access: yes, 2019
The magnitude and distribution of lead contamination remain unknown in wetland systems. Anthropogenic deposition of lead may be contributing to negative population-level effects in waterfowl and other organisms that depend on dynamic wetland habitats ...

Differential contribution of PB1-F2 to the virulence of highly pathogenic H5N1 influenza A virus in mammalian and avian species [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
Highly pathogenic avian influenza A viruses (HPAIV) of the H5N1 subtype occasionally transmit from birds to humans and can cause severe systemic infections in both hosts.

Helmeted hornbill cranial kinesis: Balancing mobility and stability in a high‐impact joint

open access: yesThe Anatomical Record, EarlyView.
Abstract Prokinesis—in which a craniofacial joint allows the rostrum to move relative to the braincase—is thought to confer diverse advantages in birds, mostly for feeding. A craniofacial joint would, however, be a weak link if cranial stability is important. Paradoxically, we have identified a craniofacial joint in helmeted hornbills (Rhinoplax vigil),
