Brittle-to-Ductile Transition in Metallic Glass Nanowires

open access: yes, 2016
When reducing the size of metallic glass samples down to the nanoscale regime, experimental studies on the plasticity under uniaxial tension show a wide range of failure modes ranging from brittle to ductile ones.

Thermal effects on fracture and brittle-to-ductile transition

open access: yes, 2023
The fracture behavior of brittle and ductile materials can be strongly influenced by thermal fluctuations, especially in micro- and nano-devices as well as in rubberlike and biological materials. However, temperature effects, in particular on the brittle-

Discrete Element Analysis of Ice-Induced Vibrations of Offshore Wind Turbines in Level Ice

open access: yesJournal of Marine Science and Engineering, 2023
Self-excited vibrations of offshore structures interacting with sea ice, characterized by low frequency and high amplitudes, pose significant hazards to offshore wind turbines (OWTs) in cold seas. This study employs the discrete element method (DEM) with

The intrinsic and extrinsic factors for brittle-to-ductile transition in bulk metallic glasses

open access: yes, 2014
We propose the ratio of critical strain energy density by distortional deformation over that by volumetric deformation as a material parameter to quantify the ductile-to-brittle transition in bulk metallic glasses (BMG).

Solid‐State Diffusion and Intermetallic Phase Formation in Roll‐Bonded Mg–Zn Composites With Kirigami‐Patterned Inlay

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Mg–Zn composites with a thickness of 0.21 mm were fabricated using roll bonding of a kirigami‐patterned Mg alloy inlay within a Zn matrix. Thermal activation following this process led to the formation of tailored intermetallic structures, which provided the composite with enhanced flexural strength.
