Ductile Cast Irons

Abstract This article presents fractographs of overload fractures in a ductile cast iron piston, tensile test bar, differential case, brake caliper, compressor crankshaft, and pivot arm. SEM images show such features as dimpled rupture at the thin metallic matrix ligatures between the graphite nodules, bull's-eye ferrite and pearlite ...

Linear contraction of ductile iron castings

International Journal of Cast Metals Research, 1998
The effect of casting design on the linear contraction of ductile iron castings produced in clay- and silicate-bonded sand moulds has been studied. The designs included free and restrained square bar castings.Free contraction of very thin sections of ductile iron in sand moulds was found to approach 1.35%.

A study of ferritic centrifugally cast ductile cast iron

Materials Letters, 1994
Abstract A ferritic matrix in ductile cast iron is usually developed by heat treatment, giving the material increased ductility and shock resistance. The effect of microstructure and the independent influence of ferrite grain size on mechanical properties (hardness, impact and tension) have been investigated, controlling microstructure by varying ...

Automotive Ductile (Nodular) Iron Castings

2017
This SAE standard covers the minimum mechanical properties measured on separately cast test pieces of varying thickness and microstructural requirements for ductile iron castings used in automotive and allied industries. Castings may be specified in the as-cast or heat-treated condition.

Ductile Iron Castings - Current Capabilities

SAE Technical Paper Series, 1973
<div class="htmlview paragraph">This paper describes ductile iron castings used in the earthmoving industry. Ductile iron is a cast ferrous alloy with carbon (in the form of graphite) and magnesium in its iron base. The graphite form can be evaluated by ASTM A-247. Ductile iron has many of the properties of gray iron, cast-iron, and steel, but it

Erosion resistance of ductile cast iron

2007
Particle erosion is wear loss from surface of solid body because of relative motion of fluid with solid particles. Erosion where are impact angle is small (less than 30°) is abrasive erosion and erosion where are impact angle is big (60° do 90°) is impact erosion.
