The in situ agglomeration behavior of semisolid Al–silicate inclusions in Si‐killed steel is studied using high‐temperature confocal scanning laser microscopy. A double intercritical annealing strategy is proposed to tailor the multiphase microstructure and mechanical response of a medium‐Mn steel. The treatment produces an ultrafine mixture of ferrite, martensite and multiple austenite populations with graded thermal and mechanical stability, formed through austenite reversion and controlled retransformation.
