The unusual metal status of the dugong Dugon dugon

Using atomic absorption spectroscopy, exceptionally high concentrations of iron (778 to 82,363 μg g+1 dry weight) and zinc (219 to 4,183 μg g+1 dry weight) were detected in the livers of Dugong dugon (Muller) from north Queensland compared with reported values for other marine mammals from other areas of the world.

Dugongs (Dugongidae: Dugong dugon) are represented by relic populations separated by areas where they are close to extinction if they not already extinct. However, in 1999, the dugong was determined to still exist in Malaysian waters after a spate of dugong deaths was reported in waters near Johors, in peninsular Malaysia.

Dugongs (Dugong dugon) are fully marine mammals that live independently of fresh water so must balance water and electrolytes in a hyperosmotic environment. To investigate osmoregulation, matched plasma and urine from 51 live wild dugongs were analysed for osmolality, major electrolytes (Na+, Cl-, K+), urea, creatinine, and glucose.

Abstract Growth layers in the dentine of about 75 dugong, Dugong dugon (Muller), unworn permanent incisor teeth have been examined with a view to absolute age determination. Thirteen of these teeth come from complete skulls which had previously been allocated relative ages within three arbitrary life stage groups (Mitchell, 1973).

This study used dena-turing gradient gel electrophoresis (DGGE) and 454-pyrosequencing to profile hindgut bacterial communities in wild dugongs.
