Experimental model to study intervertebral disc herniation [PDF]

open access: yes, 2008
OBJETIVO: Apresentar um modelo experimental de hérnia de disco e sua validação para estudo da hiperalgesia mecânica e térmica produzidas pelo contato do núcleo pulposo (NP) com as estruturas nervosas envolvidas nessa afecção.

A novel mouse model simulating C5 palsy after cervical surgery

open access: yesAnimal Models and Experimental Medicine, EarlyView.
This study establishes a reliable mouse model of permanent C5 palsy (post‐laminectomy complication) via dorsal approach, selectively severing the C5 anterior nerve root while preserving the posterior root through partial C4 and C5 laminectomy. The model successfully replicates clinical C5P features—flaccid shoulder paralysis, electrophysiological ...

Evaluation of IHH, PTCH1, and SMO protein immunohistochemistry in the human mandibular condyle at fetal stages from 30 to 80 mm greatest length

open access: yesThe Anatomical Record, EarlyView.
Abstract This study evaluated the morphogenesis of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) in human fetuses during the third month of gestation through the analysis of immunohistochemistry for the proteins Indian Hedgehog (IHH), Patched‐1 (PTCH1), and Smoothened (SMO).

Osteological correlates of the respiratory and vascular systems in the neural canals of Mesozoic ornithurines Ichthyornis and Janavis

open access: yesThe Anatomical Record, EarlyView.
Abstract In birds, the neural canal houses a variety of anatomical structures including the spinal cord, meninges, spinal vasculature, and respiratory diverticula. Among these, paramedullary diverticula and the extradural dorsal spinal vein may leave behind osteological correlates in the form of pneumatic foramina and fossae, and a bilobed geometry of ...

Dura Mater Involvement in Ochronosis (Alkaptonuria)

open access: yesArchives of Pathology & Laboratory Medicine, 2001
Abstract Clinical manifestations of alkaptonuria have been well described and are most commonly characterized by ochronosis or pigmentation of connective tissue. Sites most commonly involved in ochronosis include joints, heart, skin, and kidney. We describe a 66-year-old woman with a history of alkaptonuria who had widespread ochronosis.
