Insects and Survival: A Review of Primary and Secondary Defense Strategies

open access: yesEntomologia Experimentalis et Applicata, EarlyView.
Based on a review of three decades of literature, insect defense mechanisms are classified into primary (I) and secondary (II) mechanisms of behavioral, morphological, and chemical nature. These mechanisms have been recorded in 22 (I) and 20 (II) orders, respectively.

Golden weapons and golden fetters: From the gold standard to the new geopolitics

open access: yesThe Economic History Review, EarlyView.
Abstract This paper explores the historical relationship between monetary regimes, security concerns, and geopolitical tensions, particularly focusing on the role of gold. Throughout history, monetary systems have been deeply intertwined with international state systems and security provisions.

RAB4A acts as a negative feedback regulator of extracellular vesicle secretion during TGF‐β signaling

open access: yesThe FEBS Journal, EarlyView.
TGF‐β signaling regulates extracellular vesicle (EV) release in cancer cells by modulating the expression and activity of genes associated with EV biogenesis. The TGF‐β‐induced upregulation of RAB4A expression facilitates fast endosomal recycling, a process that limits the fusion of multivesicular bodies with the plasma membrane and EV secretion. Hence,

1H NMR metabolomics and lipidomics analysis of neutrophils reveals biomarkers of ageing, inflammageing and frailty

open access: yesThe FEBS Journal, EarlyView.
Using 1H NMR metabolomics, we measured polar and lipid metabolites from human blood neutrophils from people with frailty (n = 31, mean age 84Y), people with rheumatoid arthritis (n = 16, mean age 55Y), robust older (n = 24, mean age 66Y) and healthy younger people (n = 21, mean age 22Y).

Simultaneous modification of Thermotoga maritima encapsulin subunits to produce multivalent nanoparticle vaccines for non‐typhoidal Salmonella enterica

open access: yesThe FEBS Journal, EarlyView.
This study investigates the modularity of encapsulin—a protein nanoparticle—by simultaneously inserting up to four distinct Salmonella epitopes within the encapsulin subunit. The encapsulin variants were transiently expressed in plants where they assembled into nanoparticles; however, their accumulation and stability varied depending on the ...

Post‐Release Mortality of European Bass (Dicentrarchus labrax) Discarded From Small‐Scale Estuarine Fishing

open access: yesFisheries Management and Ecology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Estuaries provide essential habitats for many fish species, but their confined and accessible nature may increase fish vulnerability to capture, and few empirical studies have quantified the value of restricting net fisheries in such areas.

Recent advances of emergent extraction technologies to enhance bioactive compounds extraction of microalgae—An overview towards application in cosmetics

open access: yesInternational Journal of Cosmetic Science, EarlyView.
Microalgae extracts show immense potential in cosmetics for their bioactivities; emerging extraction techniques enhance bioactive compound yield from microalgae. Abstract Microalgae have attracted significant interest in numerous sectors, particularly in the cosmetic industries, owing to their rich composition of bioactive compounds. This paper aims to

Deciphering the complex life cycle and partial migration of an ecological engineer and critical Neotropical fishery species, Prochilodus costatus

open access: yesJournal of Fish Biology, EarlyView.
Abstract Understanding complex migration patterns, including drivers of partial migration and habitat use, is challenging but essential for conservation, as it determines a species' adaptative capacity in the face of environmental change and anthropogenic threats.

The state of knowledge on four families of Syngnathoidei fishes (Teleostei: Syngnathiformes): Aulostomidae, Centriscidae, Fistulariidae and Solenostomidae

open access: yesJournal of Fish Biology, EarlyView.
Abstract Knowledge on the ecology and life‐history traits of coastal marine species is vital to inform their conservation and management, especially as their coastal habitats come under increasing threats. However, such data have never been collated for four of the five families in the suborder Syngnathoidei—the close relatives of the better‐studied ...
