Constraining velocity-dependent self-interacting dark matter with the Milky Way’s dwarf spheroidal galaxies [PDF]

open access: yes, 2020
The observed anti-correlation between the central dark matter (DM) densities of the bright Milky Way (MW) dwarf spheroidal galaxies (dSphs) and their orbital pericenter distances poses a potential signature of self-interacting dark matter (SIDM). In this

The properties of dwarf spheroidal galaxies in the Cen A group [PDF]

open access: yesAstronomy & Astrophysics, 2020
Dwarf spheroidal galaxies (dSphs) have been extensively investigated in the Local Group, but their low luminosity and surface brightness make similar work in more distant galaxy groups challenging.

Laboratory exploration of mineral precipitates from Europa's subsurface ocean

open access: yesJournal of Applied Crystallography, Volume 54, Issue 5, Page 1455-1479, October 2021., 2021
Precipitation experiments from a model Europan ocean solution subjected to fast and slow freezing suggest that the highly hydrated Na–Mg sulfate phase Na2Mg(SO4)2·16H2O is one of the lowest‐temperature mineral phases likely to be stable on Europa's surface and may therefore be astrobiologically significant. The precipitation of hydrated phases from a ...

Searching for Dark Matter Annihilation from Milky Way Dwarf Spheroidal Galaxies with Six Years of Fermi Large Area Telescope Data. [PDF]

open access: yesPhysical Review Letters, 2015
The dwarf spheroidal satellite galaxies (dSphs) of the Milky Way are some of the most dark matter (DM) dominated objects known. We report on γ-ray observations of Milky Way dSphs based on six years of Fermi Large Area Telescope data processed with the ...

Orbital Evidences for Dark-matter-free Milky Way Dwarf Spheroidal Galaxies [PDF]

open access: yesAstrophysical Journal, 2020
The nature of Milky Way dwarf spheroidals (MW dSphs) has been questioned, in particular whether they are dominated by dark matter (DM). Here we investigate an alternative scenario, for which tidal shocks are exerted by the MW to DM-free dSphs after a ...

1I/‘Oumuamua as an N2 Ice Fragment of an Exo‐Pluto Surface II: Generation of N2 Ice Fragments and the Origin of ‘Oumuamua

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Planets, Volume 126, Issue 5, May 2021., 2021
Abstract The origin of the interstellar object 1I/‘Oumuamua has defied explanation. In a companion paper (Jackson & Desch, 2021), we show that a body of N2 ice with axes 45 m × 44 m × 7.5 m at the time of observation would be consistent with its albedo, nongravitational acceleration, and lack of observed CO or CO2 or dust.

Manganese in dwarf spheroidal galaxies [PDF]

open access: yesAstronomy & Astrophysics, 2012
We provide manganese abundances (corrected for the effect of the hyperfine structure) for a large number of stars in the dwarf spheroidal galaxies Sculptor and Fornax and for a smaller number in the Carina and Sextans dSph galaxies. Abundances had already been determined for a number of other elements in these galaxies including a and iron peak ones ...

Dwarf Spheroidal Galaxies in the Virgo Cluster [PDF]

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal, 1998
We present a study of the smallest and faintest galaxies found in a very deep photographic R band survey of regions of the Virgo Cluster, totalling over 3 square degrees, made with the UK Schmidt Telescope. The objects we detect have the same physical sizes and surface brightnesses as Local Group dwarf spheroidal galaxies.
