The Progenitors of Dwarf Spheroidal Galaxies [PDF]

open access: yesThe Astronomical Journal, 2003
Dwarf spheroidal (dSph) galaxies present an evolutionary puzzle that we explore in 40 early- and late-type dwarfs in the Local Group and nearby field. Although dSphs formed stars over extended periods, today all but one are free of detectable interstellar matter (ISM), even in the Fornax dSph, where stars still formed 100 Myr ago.

The quest for dark matter in dwarf spheroidal galaxies with the Cherenkov Telescope Array [PDF]

open access: yesEPJ Web of Conferences, 2019
Dwarf spheroidal galaxies are among the best environments that can be studied with Cherenkov telescopes for indirect searches of γ-ray signals coming from dark matter self-interaction (annihilation or decay), due to their proximity and negligible ...

Young Globular Clusters and Dwarf Spheroidals [PDF]

open access: yes, 1999
Most of the globular clusters in the main body of the Galactic halo were formed almost simultaneously. However, globular cluster formation in dwarf spheroidal galaxies appears to have extended over a significant fraction of a Hubble time.

FORMATION OF DWARF SPHEROIDAL GALAXIES VIA MERGERS OF DISKY DWARFS [PDF]

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal, 2011
We perform collisionless N-body simulations to investigate whether binary mergers between rotationally supported dwarfs can lead to the formation of dwarf spheroidal galaxies (dSphs). Our simulation campaign is based on a hybrid approach combining cosmological simulations and controlled numerical experiments.

Abundance Analysis of Stars at Large Radius in the Sextans Dwarf Spheroidal Galaxy

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal, 2023
We present the stellar parameters and chemical abundances of 30 elements for five stars located at large radii (3.5–10.7 times the half-light radius) in the Sextans dwarf spheroidal galaxy. We selected these stars using proper motions, radial velocities,

The puzzling assembly of the Milky Way halo – contributions from dwarf Spheroidals and globular clusters

open access: yesEPJ Web of Conferences, 2012
While recent sky surveys have uncovered large numbers of ever fainter Milky Way satellites, their classification as star clusters, low-luminosity galaxies, or tidal overdensities remains often unclear. Likewise, their contributions to the build-up of the

Galaxy threshing and the formation of ultra-compact dwarf galaxies [PDF]

open access: yes, 2001
Recent spectroscopic and morphological observational studies of galaxies around NGC 1399 in the Fornax Cluster (Drinkwater et al. 2000b) have discovered several `ultra-compact dwarf' galaxies with intrinsic sizes of $\sim$ 100 pc and absolute $B$ band ...

Dwarf Spheroidal Satellite Formation in a Reionized Local Group [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
Dwarf spheroidal satellite galaxies have emerged a powerful probe of small-scale dark matter clustering and of cosmic reionization. They exhibit structural and chemical continuity with dwarf irregular galaxies in the field and with spheroidal galaxies in
