Measurement of solid precipitation with an optical disdrometer [PDF]

open access: yesAdvances in Geosciences, 2007
A study about measurements of solid precipitation using an optical disdrometer is presented. The optical disdrometer is an improved version of the ODM 470 disdrometer.

Large scale features associated with strong frontogenesis in equivalent potential temperature in the South American subtropics east of the Andes [PDF]

open access: yesAdvances in Geosciences, 2009
South American subtropics east of the Andes exhibit a region of intense climatological frontogenesis in equivalent potential temperature (EPT) in the December to March season, mostly produced by deformation of the wind field. The goal of this paper is to

Influence of vibrations on structures [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
One type of occasional structural load is a seismic load. Earthquakes and blasts are typical sources of vibrations, but vibration generated during urban tunnel construction can represent a significant problem.

Long‐Term Active Rather than Passive Restoration Promotes Soil Organic Carbon Accumulation by Alleviating Microbial Nitrogen Limitation in an Extremely Degraded Alpine Grassland

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Active restoration increases soil organic carbon stocks by reducing microbial nitrogen limitation. Nitrogen availability promotes particulate to mineral‐associated organic carbon conversion by reducing microbial carbon use efficiency. Passive restoration has no effect on soil organic carbon stocks.

Inverse stochastic–dynamic models for high-resolution Greenland ice core records [PDF]

open access: yesEarth System Dynamics, 2017
Proxy records from Greenland ice cores have been studied for several decades, yet many open questions remain regarding the climate variability encoded therein.

A radiometric airborne geophysical survey of the Isle of Wight [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
A high resolution airborne geophysical survey across the Isle of Wight and Lymington area conducted in 2008 provided the first modern radiometric survey across the geological formations that characterise much of southern England.

Genomics Insights Into High‐Latitude Adaptation of Tibetan Macaques

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Tibetan macaques exhibit unique adaptations to cold, high‐latitude environments, including shortened tails and enhanced fat storage. Genomic analyses reveal a species‐specific TBX6 mutation linked to tail reduction and selection on lipid metabolism genes.

Applying the concept of "energy return on investment" to desert greening of the Sahara/Sahel using a global climate model [PDF]

open access: yesEarth System Dynamics, 2014
Altering the large-scale dynamics of the Earth system through continual and deliberate human intervention now seems possible. In doing so, one should question the energetic sustainability of such interventions. Here, from the basis that a region might be
