Systemic dysregulation of apolipoproteins in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis serum

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a fatal disease that damages motor neurons. This study found that people with ALS show significant changes in blood fats and the proteins that carry them. Several apolipoproteins were higher, lipid balances were altered, and normal protein–lipid relationships were disrupted.

Overland flow: interfacing models with measurements

open access: yes, 2002
Index words: overland flow, catchment scale, system identification, ensemble simulations. This study presents new techniques to identify scale-dependent overland flow models and use these for ensemble-based predictions. The techniques are developed on the

Hybrid stochastic framework for freeway traffic flow modelling [PDF]

open access: yes, 2003
Traffic flow is an interesting many-particle phenomenon, with nonlinear interactions between the vehicles. This paper studies highway traffic and presents a general framework for traffic modelling as a stochastic hybrid system (with contin uous and ...

Large‐scale bidirectional arrayed genetic screens identify OXR1 and EMC4 as modifiers of αSynuclein aggregation

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Activation of the mitochondrial protein OXR1 increases pSyn129 αSynuclein aggregation by lowering ATP levels and altering mitochondrial membrane potential, particularly in response to MSA‐derived fibrils. In contrast, ablation of the ER protein EMC4 enhances autophagic flux and lysosomal clearance, broadly reducing α‐synuclein aggregates.

A Decomposition Theorem for Dynamic Flows

open access: yesCoRR
The famous flow decomposition theorem of Gallai (1985) states that any static edge $s$,$d$-flow in a directed graph can be decomposed into a nonnegative linear combination of incidence vectors of paths and cycles. In this paper, we study the decomposition problem for the setting of dynamic edge $s$,$d$-flows assuming a quite general dynamic flow ...

Measuring contact line dissipation in dynamic wetting

open access: yes, 2011
Dynamic wetting of a solid surface is a process that is ubiquitous in nature, and also of increasing technological importance. The underlying dissipative mechanisms are however still unclear.

The skills required for transition to university and study in biological sciences: A student perspective

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Bioscience students were asked for their opinions on the value and teaching of skills. 204 responded that teamwork, time management and study skills are necessary to reach University, that scientific writing, research, laboratory and presentation skills are taught effectively during their studies, while other skills are gained inherently through study ...
