Spiky Bursts of Energetic Electron Beams Upstream of Nonstationary Quasi‐Perpendicular Shocks

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, Volume 53, Issue 16, 28 August 2026.
Abstract Energetic electron beams play a crucial role in collisionless shocks by driving upstream plasma waves and providing seed populations for diffusive shock acceleration. However, the processes responsible for their generation at quasi‐perpendicular shocks remain poorly understood.

The Role of Lightning in Atmospheric Chemistry

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Atmospheres, Volume 131, Issue 16, 28 August 2026.
Abstract Lightning has important effects on atmospheric constituents in primarily the middle and upper troposphere. We summarize the effects of lightning on atmospheric chemistry that have been published since the last major review in 2007. The estimates of NOx production by lightning (LNOx) are based on five methods: theoretical/laboratory estimates ...

Dynamics of Particle Precipitation in the Auroral Ionosphere. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
Energetic electrons deposit significant amounts of energy into the ionosphere during precipitation events. Riometers provide a means of monitoring this precipitation by measuring the associated cosmic noise absorption. Individually however they cannot provide any details about the energies of the precipitating electrons.
