Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, 2013 Significance Genera are often viewed as artificial constructs of taxonomic practice. Here, we show that a stochastic model that includes three events with constant rates—species formation, extinction of species, and origination of new genera—can describe well the species-within-genus distributions for large taxa.
