Determination of the Dynamic Shear Modulus of a Composite Solid Propellant

Structural analyses of large solid propellant motors subjected to an environment of transportation and handling must include the contribution of the solid propellant. More accurate propellant mechanical properties are needed for this purpose than are presently being obtained.

The dynamic longitudinal shear modulus and damping of carbon fibres

Results are presented of torsion pendulum measurements of the longitudinal shear modulus GLT and damping Psi LT of single carbon fibres in the frequency range 0.01-0.1 Hz. Cyclic surface shear strains up to 10-3 had no noticeable effect on either GLT or Psi LT. Both GLT and Psi LT increase in the presence of an axial tensile stress.

Abstract An apparatus is described which subjects a rubber test-piece to a force in simple shear, varying sinusoidally with time in the frequency range of 0.0017– 17 c/s, the instantaneous values of force and displacement being measured by photoelectric pickups.
