On the Variability of Results for Cylinder Flow: A Systematic Analysis of Parameter Sensitivity Within the Lattice Boltzmann Method

open access: yesInternational Journal for Numerical Methods in Fluids, EarlyView.
This study systematically investigates the variability of cylinder flow results. We provide a comprehensive overview of literature values and, using the lattice Boltzmann method (LBM), show that insufficient convergence studies and variations in simulation parameters are a plausible cause for the significant spread in data.

Impact of Subgrid-Scale Modeling in Actuator-Line Based Large-Eddy Simulation of Vertical-Axis Wind Turbine Wakes

open access: yesAtmosphere, 2018
A large-eddy simulation (LES) study of vertical-axis wind turbine wakes under uniform inflow conditions is performed. Emphasis is placed on exploring the effects of subgrid-scale (SGS) modeling on turbine loading as well as on the formation and ...

The evaluation of boundary‐layer turbulence in high‐resolution numerical weather prediction simulations using Doppler lidar

open access: yesQuarterly Journal of the Royal Meteorological Society, EarlyView.
A new method compares both kilometer and sub‐kilometre weather model simulations with Doppler lidar observations to assess the representation of boundary‐layer turbulence. While bulk boundary‐layer properties are well represented, vertical velocity variance is strongly underestimated in both simulations.

Aerodynamic-Aeroacoustic Optimization of a Baseline Wing and Flap Configuration

open access: yesApplied Sciences, 2022
Optimization design was widely used in the high-lift device design process, and the aeroacoustic reduction characteristic is an important objective of the optimization.

New insights into convection‐permitting model simulations from a ZDR$$ {\boldsymbol{Z}}_{\mathbf{DR}} $$ diagnostic for raindrops

open access: yesQuarterly Journal of the Royal Meteorological Society, EarlyView.
A polarimetric radar forward operator to simulate differential reflectivity (ZDR$$ {Z}_{\mathrm{DR}} $$) from rain was developed to evaluate simulated storms in the Met Office Unified Model (MetUM) for two case days of the Wessex Convection Experiment (WesCon) field campaign. Vertical columns of ZDR$$ {Z}_{\mathrm{DR}} $$, indicative of strong updrafts,

On the aeroacoustic properties of a beveled plate

open access: yesE3S Web of Conferences, 2015
The flow around a beveled flat plate model with an asymmetric 25 degrees trailing edge with three rounding radii is analyzed using a Navier-Stokes based open source software package OpenFOAM in order to predict the aeroacoustic properties of the models ...

Subgrid Parameterizations of Ocean Mesoscale Eddies Based on Germano Decomposition

open access: yesJournal of Advances in Modeling Earth Systems, 2023
Ocean models at intermediate resolution (1/4°), which partially resolve mesoscale eddies, can be seen as Large eddy simulations of the primitive equations, in which the effect of unresolved eddies must be parameterized.

Vibrational Exfoliation of 2D Materials

open access: yesSmall, EarlyView.
Vibrational energy folds, fractures and exfoliates atomically and molecularly thin materials. Combining experimentation and computational methods, this unique vibrational synthesis pathway is revealed. This process overcomes barriers of existing approaches by processing 1000 g/L dispersions without loss in yield.

Numerical Simulation of CAARC Standard High-Rise Building Model Based on MRT-LBM Large Eddy Simulation

open access: yesShock and Vibration, 2022
The calculation of wind load of high-rise buildings depends on the wind pressure distribution data and wind pressure coefficient on the outer surface of the building, but the actual wind pressure measurement of high-rise buildings is difficult to carry ...

Aligning Real‐Time Recurrence Computational Fluid Dynamics Simulations with Plant Data for the Ruhrstahl–Heraeus Degassing Process of Steel

open access: yessteel research international, Volume 97, Issue 8, Page 4207-4222, August 2026.
Uncertainties exist in computational fluid dynamics (CFD) modeling of complex metallurgical processes, even when partly validated by laboratory experiments. rCFD enables computationally efficient prediction of long‐term RH degassing and can be adapted to vary flow conditions.
