Faint galaxies: merging model of E/SO galaxies

Astrophysics and Space Science, 1995
We study a model of mergers affecting only the progenitors of present E/SO. We adopt the standard scenarios of star formation as prescribed by Guiderdoni & Rocca-Volmerange. The merging process is parametrized under the assumptions of(1) self-similarity of the Schechter MF and(2) mass conservation. Nine models are discussed.

The nature of E and SO galaxies

Astrophysical letters & communications, 1995
Differences and similarities of E and SO galaxies have been studied based on CCD surface photometry in Gunn r for a magnitude limited sample of E and SO galaxies in the Coma cluster. Spectroscopy is available for about half the sample. Our analysis of the relative disk luminosities, the Fundamental Plane, and the Mg-2-log sigma relation implies that E ...

Galaxy: A Gateway to Tools in e-Science

2011
e-Science focuses on the use of computational tools and resources to analyze large scientific datasets. Performing these analyses often requires running a variety of computational tools specific to a given scientific domain. This places a significant burden on individual researchers for whom simply running these tools may be prohibitively difficult ...

E and S0 Galaxies in the Perseus Supercluster

1989
The Perseus Supercluster is a huge structure belonging to the Southern Galactic Hemisphere and probably extending to the Northern one [1]. It has been the subject of many different studies.

Dynamics of E Galaxies and Cluster Sources

1988
Spherical stellar systems with large numbers of stars on nearly radial orbits are prone to be bar unstable. It seems likely that stars formed from a cooling flow tend to populate such orbits, thus ensuring that the underlying galaxy is barred; a simple estimate suggests that a mass deposition rate in excess of 5 M⊙ yr-1 should suffice for this purpose.
