Geobacter Strains Expressing Poorly Conductive Pili Reveal Constraints on Direct Interspecies Electron Transfer Mechanisms

open access: yesmBio, 2018
Cytochrome-to-cytochrome electron transfer and electron transfer along conduits of multiple extracellular magnetite grains are often proposed as strategies for direct interspecies electron transfer (DIET) that do not require electrically conductive pili (

Hair Follicle Seedling Cryomicroneedles from Hierarchical Microfluidic Organoid on a Chip

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
In this paper, a hierarchical microfluidic chip is developed to produce uniform hair follicle organoids (HFOs) in cryomicroneedles. Cryopreservation agents encapsulate HFOs, preserving viability and hair growth potential. The cryomicroneedles enable simple intradermal transplantation with good skin penetration.

Production of pili, hemolysin and siderophores in the urinary isolates of Escherichia coli [PDF]

open access: yesSrpski Arhiv za Celokupno Lekarstvo, 2013
Introduction. Escherichia coli (E. coli) are the most frequent cause of the urinary tract infections. Uropathogenic E. coli (UPEC) produce virulence factors which enable them to survive in the urinary tract and cause an infection. Objective.

A Single‐Cell Transcriptomic Atlas of the Ovine Rumen Microbiome Characterizes Lineage‐Specific Metabolic Shifts Associated with Host Heat Tolerance

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
An optimized single‐cell transcriptomic framework profiles over 60 000 cells to map the ovine rumen microbiome, partitioning the ecosystem into seven cross‐species functional clusters. In heat‐resistant hosts, a lineage‐specific metabolic shift in Anaerovibrio lipolyticus toward a highly glycolytic phenotype contributes to a “nutritional sparing ...

Modulation of Animal Gut Health by Milk Oligosaccharide

open access: yesAnimal Research and One Health, EarlyView.
This review summarizes the composition and structural characteristics of MOs across different mammalian species, and elucidates their roles and mechanisms in maintaining intestinal homeostasis by regulating gut microbiome and enhancing intestinal chemical, physical and immune barriers.

Human Urine Decreases Function and Expression of Type 1 Pili in Uropathogenic Escherichia coli

open access: yesmBio, 2015
Uropathogenic Escherichia coli (UPEC) is the primary cause of community-acquired urinary tract infections (UTIs). UPEC bind the bladder using type 1 pili, encoded by the fim operon in nearly all E. coli.

Immunoinformatics‐Based Design of a Multi‐Epitope Vaccine Targeting a Conserved Copper–Associated Protein in Neisseria gonorrhoeae

open access: yesBiotechnology and Applied Biochemistry, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Neisseria gonorrhoeae poses an urgent public health challenge due to rapidly increasing antimicrobial resistance and the absence of an effective vaccine. Targeting conserved bacterial pathways involved in essential physiological processes may provide new opportunities for vaccine antigen discovery.

Role of type IV pili in predation by Bdellovibrio bacteriovorus. [PDF]

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2014
Bdellovibrio bacteriovorus, as an obligate predator of Gram-negative bacteria, requires contact with the surface of a prey cell in order to initiate the life cycle.
