The HtrA chaperone monitors sortase-assembled pilus biogenesis in Enterococcus faecalis.

open access: yesPLoS Genetics
Sortase-assembled pili contribute to virulence in many Gram-positive bacteria. In Enterococcus faecalis, the endocarditis and biofilm-associated pilus (Ebp) is polymerized on the membrane by sortase C (SrtC) and attached to the cell wall by sortase A ...

Functional role of the type 1 pilus rod structure in mediating host-pathogen interactions

open access: yeseLife, 2018
Uropathogenic E. coli (UPEC), which cause urinary tract infections (UTI), utilize type 1 pili, a chaperone usher pathway (CUP) pilus, to cause UTI and colonize the gut.

Chasing the perfida Albione: Anglo‐Italian productivity gap in the late 1930s

open access: yesThe Economic History Review, EarlyView.
Abstract This paper presents new estimates of Anglo‐Italian labour productivity levels in manufacturing in the late 1930s, derived using the standard single‐deflation approach. The findings confirm a substantial productivity gap between Italy and the United Kingdom at the aggregate level, alongside pronounced intersectoral heterogeneity.

Water, water, every where—the advent of hydrated pili structure

open access: yesThe FEBS Journal, EarlyView.
Protein structure is defined by its surrounding water. Naturally, this is also true for the gigantic protein filaments that pathogenic bacteria use to attach to and colonize their host cells. Structures of these filaments for which water can be identified with high confidence have stayed elusive for the longest time.

Scalp Microbiome Alterations in Androgenetic Alopecia: Patterns and Emerging Mechanistic Insights

open access: yesInternational Journal of Dermatology, EarlyView.
Summary of the microbiome‐lipid‐microinflammation axis in androgenetic alopecia (AGA). Altered sebaceous gland activity, shifts in microbial abundance on the scalp and hair follicle, and follicular microinflammation interact bidirectionally, each reinforcing the others.

Electrically Conductive Pili from Pilin Genes of Phylogenetically Diverse Microorganisms

open access: yes, 2017
The possibility that bacteria other than Geobacter species might contain genes for electrically conductive pili (e-pili) was investigated by heterologously expressing pilin genes of interest in Geobacter sulfurreducens. Strains of G.
