A technique to increase the effective length of horizontal earth electrodes and its application to a practical earth electrode system

2011 7th Asia-Pacific International Conference on Lightning, 2011
The ability of a horizontal earth electrode in reducing earth potential rise is limited because, beyond a certain length known as the effective length, no further reduction is obtained. In this paper, field experiments and computer simulations of a horizontal earth electrode is presented.

Grounding/earthing electrode studies. 2

Proceedings of Industrial and Commercial Power Systems Conference, 2002
The paper details the effort to determine the adequacy of various methods of grounding/earthing electrodes installed in the alkaline, highly mineralized soil of the Las Vegas, Nevada area The grounding electrode testing program outlined has been prepared to address a number of questions relating to grounding [earthing] electrodes and soil conditions in

Earth resistance of various forms of electrodes

Proceedings of the Institution of Electrical Engineers, 1969
In a recent paper, Datta et al. have shown that a very simple method for finding the earth resistance of driven-rod electrodes can be used on the assumption that the equipotentials round the electrode conform to the shape of the electrode itself. In this paper, the method has been extended to various forms of electrode usually employed in practice ...

Distribution of Impulse Current in Earth Grid Electrodes

2020 55th International Universities Power Engineering Conference (UPEC), 2020
This paper reports the results of an experimental study to measure the current distribution in the horizontal branches of (i) a reduced-scale earth grid buried in real soil and (ii) the grid with bonded vertical rods at its corners. Low- magnitude lightning-type impulse currents were injected at the centre and at the corner of the grid.

Potential Distribution About an Electrode on the Surface of the Earth

Physics, 1933
An analytical study is made of the potential distribution about an electrode on a stratified earth, from the point of view of developing special formulas appropriate for computation at small and large distances from the electrode. Power series in the distance for small distances and simple asymptotic expansions for large separations are derived first ...

Measurement of earth-electrode resistance with particular reference to earth-electrode systems covering a large area

Proceedings of the Institution of Electrical Engineers, 1964
The method of measuring an earth-electrode resistance has been known for a number of years, but there are some aspects of the measurement which are not fully understood. In particular, there are difficulties which arise when the earth-electrode system is of large physical dimensions, e.g. that of a substation or power station.

Resistance to earth of substation earth electrodes in uniform and two-layer soils

Electrical Engineering, 1997
The resistance to earth of square and rectangular grid and combined grid-multiple rods earth electrodes buried in uniform and two-layer soils has been analyzed for a wide set of electrodes and soil parameters. Novel approximate expressions for earth resistance are deduced based upon the data obtained by exact computer modelling. These expressions and a

Impedance characteristics of grounding electrodes on earth surface

2010 30th International Conference on Lightning Protection (ICLP), 2010
Abstract This paper deals with the comparison of impedance characteristics of grounding electrodes on earth surface and those that are buried underground. The impedance characteristics are investigated analytically, experimentally and numerically.

Study on Sharing Earth Electrode of UHVDC

2006 International Conference on Power System Technology, 2006
This paper analyzes the different operation modes of the UHVDC system sharing earth electrode from the aspect of power system stable operation. Two UHVDC system rectifiers and inverters sharing earth electrode were studied respectively by electromagnetic transient analysis software EMTP-RV based on the main parameters of Xiang jiaba to Nan hui ...

Resistance of large earth-electrode systems

Proceedings of the Institution of Electrical Engineers, 1972
In three earlier papers by the same author, methods have been suggested for the measurement of the resistance of large earth-electrode systems, which presents certain difficult problems. These methods are all based on certain assumptions, and it may be that, in practice, these assumptions are not fully justified, and so errors may occur. Again, each of
