Dam-Breach hydrology of the Johnstown flood of 1889–challenging the findings of the 1891 investigation report

open access: yesHeliyon, 2016
In 1891 a report was published by an ASCE committee to investigate the cause of the Johnstown flood of 1889. They concluded that changes made to the dam by the South Fork Fishing and Hunting Club did not cause the disaster because the embankment would ...

Origin of life: β‐sheet amyloid conformers as the primordial functional polymers on the early Earth and their role in the emergence of complex dynamic networks

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
The amyloid world hypothesis of the origin‐of‐life posits that the first functional polymers on the early Earth were structurally stable cross‐β‐sheet‐based peptide amyloids capable of Darwinian‐like evolution. Peptide amyloids display self‐replication and information transfer, as well as catalytic, adaptive, and evolutive properties.

Enhanced global extreme droughts driven by the Indian Ocean and Pacific Ocean on decadal timescales

open access: yesiScience
Summary: In the 21st century, two record-breaking years of extreme drought coverage swept across the globe. These resulted in billions of agriculture losses and led to hunger and poverty in those developing countries.

Integrating species-centric and geomorphic-centric views of interior least tern and piping plover habitat selection

open access: yesHeliyon, 2018
The Federally endangered interior least tern (Sterna antillarum athalassos) and threatened piping plover (Charadrius melodus) nest on emergent sandbars in several braided rivers in the USA.

The epithelial barrier theory proposes a comprehensive explanation for the origins of allergic and other chronic noncommunicable diseases

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Exposure to common noxious agents (1), including allergens, pollutants, and micro‐nanoplastics, can cause epithelial barrier damage (2) in our body's protective linings. This may trigger an immune response to our microbiome (3). The epithelial barrier theory explains how this process can lead to chronic noncommunicable diseases (4) affecting organs ...

Tectonic setting for Tsunemori Formation in the Permian accretionary complex of the Akiyoshi Belt, Southwest Japan

open access: yesHeliyon, 2018
The purpose of this study is to reexamine the age, depositional environment, and tectonic setting of the Tsunemori Formation. This study provides a new tectonic model on the formation of Tsunemori Formation, which is a key formation to understand the ...

Opportunities for Characterizing Geological Flows Using Magnetic Resonance Imaging

open access: yesiScience, 2020
Summary: Geological flows—from mudslides to volcanic eruptions—are often opaque and consist of multiple interacting phases. Scaled laboratory geological experiments using analog materials have often been limited to optical imaging of flow exteriors or ex

Inspecting map compilation in earth sciences for better communication

open access: yesHungarian Geographical Bulletin, 2021
The use of thematic cartography in earth sciences is a frequent task for researchers when publishing. When creating a map, researchers intend to communicate important spatial information that enhances, supplements or replaces textual content.
