Abstract This chapter describes the components of the Earth system that determine the weather phenomena, introduces the notion of an accurate and skillful forecast, and discusses how heat is transported and exchanged and where the energy that drives weather phenomena comes from. More specifically, it addresses the following questions:

Tidal effects in the earth–moon system and the earth's rotation
Celestial Mechanics and Dynamical Astronomy, 1999The author derives analytical expressions for tidal torques on a non-rigid planet, which perturb the rotation of the planet. These expressions are used to obtain secular and periodic perturbations of Euler's angles for the Earth's rotation. The secular effects caused by the tidal dissipation, which do not exist in the rigid planet model, can be very ...

Earth systems engineering and management
IEEE Technology and Society Magazine, 2000The impact of human activities on natural systems has grown to the point that we need to engage consciously in earth systems engineering and management. I address why this is the case, and what I mean by such a provocative term. In addition, I explore what we can learn from relevant experience, and how this daunting task should be approached.
