Probabilistic Approach to Provide Scenarios of Earthquake-Induced Slope Failures (PARSIFAL) Applied to the Alcoy Basin (South Spain)

open access: yesGeosciences, 2018
The PARSIFAL (Probabilistic Approach to pRovide Scenarios of earthquake-Induced slope FAiLures) approach was applied in the basin of Alcoy (Alicante, South Spain), to provide a comprehensive scenario of earthquake-induced landslides.

Selected Physical and Geotechnical Properties of Loess in Wairarapa Valley, New Zealand

open access: yesNew Zealand Journal of Geology and Geophysics, Volume 69, Issue 4, December 2026.
Loess up to 10 m thick covers marine terraces, old river aggradation terraces, and gentle hill country slopes in Wairarapa, New Zealand. In the drier eastern and southern parts of Wairarapa, the loess is subject to dry summer and autumn and wet winter and spring in most years.

Small-scale modelling of plant root systems using 3D printing, with applications to investigate the role of vegetation on earthquake-induced landslides

open access: yesLandslides, 2017
Vegetation has been previously proposed as a method for protecting artificial and natural slopes against shallow landslides (e.g. as may be triggered by an earthquake); however, previous research has concentrated on individual root soil interaction ...

Rising Waters, Shifting Finances: Rural Household Decisions Under Flood Risk

open access: yesJournal of Flood Risk Management, Volume 19, Issue 4, December 2026.
ABSTRACT This study examines how flood exposure and credit‐market reform jointly shape household repayment behavior in flood‐prone rural areas. Using monthly household loan records from Jiayu County, Hubei Province, China, during the 2020 flood season, we analyze first‐time overdue behavior and proactive repayment toward overdue debt.

Noncontact detection of earthquake-induced landslides by an enhanced image binarization method incorporating with Monte-Carlo simulation

open access: yesGeomatics, Natural Hazards & Risk, 2019
Detecting landslides using remote sensing images involves converting gray level images into binary images. Given the complex background and non-uniform illumination in the regional remote sensing image, the commonly-used global thresholding methods are ...

Sustainable and Seismically Resilient Confined Masonry: Global Progress in Research and Design Practice

open access: yesEarthquake Spectra, Volume 42, Issue 4, November 2026.
Modern confined masonry (CM) construction consists of masonry walls confined by reinforced concrete (RC) tie‐columns and tie‐beams. When built correctly, CM buildings have shown good performance in earthquake's shaking. Even though CM construction has been practised for almost a century in some Latin American countries, its use and standardisation are ...

Landslides triggered by an earthquake and heavy rainfalls at Aso volcano, Japan, detected by UAS and SfM-MVS photogrammetry

open access: yesProgress in Earth and Planetary Science, 2018
Unmanned aerial systems (UASs) and structure-from-motion multi-view stereo (SfM-MVS) photogrammetry have attracted a tremendous amount of interest for use in the creation of high-definition topographic data for geoscientific studies.
