The impact of a and b value uncertainty on loss estimation in the reinsurance industry

open access: yesAnnals of Geophysics, 2000
In the reinsurance industry different probabilistic models are currently used for seismic risk analysis. A credible loss estimation of the insured values depends on seismic hazard analysis and on the vulnerability functions of the given structures ...

Fractal analysis of the seismicity of the territory of Azerbaijan

open access: yesГеофизический журнал, 2020
The article examines the distribution of earthquakes occurred in Azerbaijan and the adjacent territories during the instrumental period (1902¾2018) by investigating the self-similarity and fractal properties of the seismicity of the region.

Catalogues of historical earthquakes in Italy

open access: yesAnnals of Geophysics, 2004
A complete survey of historical earthquake investigation in Italy cannot be compressed into a few pages, since it would entail making a summary of widely different phases of research (performed by past scholars and by contemporary scientists and historians) and taking into account the widely different historical contexts, methodological assumptions and

Benjamin Robins's New Principles of Gunnery and the Response From the British Mathematical, Educational, and Military World of the Mid‐Eighteenth Century

open access: yesJournal for Eighteenth-Century Studies, EarlyView.
Abstract This article analyses to what degree Benjamin Robins's discoveries in his book New Principles of Gunnery, 1742, affected the British mathematical, military, and educational world of the mid‐eighteenth century. While it drew praise and critique from Europe, especially from the notable mathematician Leonhard Euler, his mathematical theories were

Similar or Different? Configurations of Authenticity Across Museum Types

open access: yesCurator: The Museum Journal, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Authenticity is traditionally regarded as playing a crucial role in museums, science centers, and memorials. However, despite this fact, authenticity has very different meanings in different (institutional) settings. This complicates shared communications across museum practices.

Directional information flow in human frataxin defines allosteric pathways connecting the hydrophobic core to the iron‐binding ridge

open access: yesThe FEBS Journal, EarlyView.
Human frataxin deficiency causes Friedreich's ataxia, yet how iron‐binding events are communicated across the protein is unclear. Using transfer entropy analysis of molecular dynamics simulations, we identify buried hydrophobic core leucines (LEU136, LEU140) as the source of directional signaling toward the iron‐binding acidic ridge.

The new "Catalogue of Strong Italian Earthquakes"

open access: yesAnnals of Geophysics, 1995
We describe a new catalogue of strong ltalian earthquakes that the Istituto Nazionale di Geofisica in collaboration with SGA, has recently made available to the international scientific community and to the general public. The new catalogue differs from previous efforts in that for each event the usual seismic parameters are complemented by a list of ...

“There's Pressure to Use Standard English”: Lingering Linguicism in the Work of Signed Language Interpreters

open access: yesInternational Journal of Applied Linguistics, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Applied linguistics and interpreting have much in common; however, the education of signed language interpreters in the States provides barely any applied linguistics training. Linguistic racism (linguicism) frames the education and evaluation of sign language interpreters.

Simulated Seismicity as a Tool for Studying the Long-Term Seismogenic Process: An Italy–Japan Comparison

open access: yesApplied Sciences
In this study, we aimed to assess the capacity of a physics-based earthquake simulator to improve our understanding of the seismogenic process. In this respect, we applied a previously tested earthquake simulator to two well-known and completely ...

Strong earthquakes included «by chance» in Italian catalogues: single cases or a hint of more?

open access: yesAnnals of Geophysics, 2003
In principle, a few of the strong earthquakes (I0 >= 8/9, M >= 5.8) that affected Italy in the past may still be missing from parametric catalogues or be listed there as lesser events, their actual strength unrealized.
