Thermal‐induced fracture evolution and acoustic signature of Beishan granite: Insights into tensile strength of barrier system for high‐level radioactive waste disposal

open access: yesDeep Underground Science and Engineering, EarlyView.
The tensile strength of granite, a proposed host for nuclear waste, degrades severely above 400°C. We link this to specific microcracking patterns captured by acoustic emission, establishing a scientific basis for assessing repository safety under thermal load.

NEAR REAL-TIME DETERMINATION OF EARTHQUAKE SOURCE PARAMETERS FOR TSUNAMI EARLY WARNING FROM GEODETIC OBSERVATIONS [PDF]

open access: yesThe International Archives of the Photogrammetry, Remote Sensing and Spatial Information Sciences, 2016
Exemplifying the tsunami source immediately after an earthquake is the most critical component of tsunami early warning, as not every earthquake generates a tsunami.

Istanbul Earthquake Rapid Response and the Early Warning System

open access: yes, 2003
One hundred strong motion accelerometers have been placed in populated areas of Istanbul, within an area of approximately 50 x 30 km, to constitute a network that will enable rapid shake map and damage assessment after a damaging earthquake.

Advances in vital‐sign prediction and early‐warning models for underground coal mine workers integrating environmental factors

open access: yesDeep Underground Science and Engineering, EarlyView.
This review synthesizes advances in predicting miners' vital signs by integrating environmental monitoring (dust, temperature, and gas) with physiological data. It highlights multi‐source data fusion techniques and early‐warning models for enhanced occupational safety in underground coal mines.

The Crywolf Issue in Earthquake Early Warning Applications for the Campania Region

open access: yes, 2007
Earthquake early warning systems (EEWS), based on real-time prediction of ground motion or structural response measures, may play a role in re- ducing vulnerability and/or exposure of buildings and lifelines.

Numerical simulation study on the characteristics and propagation attenuation of vibration signals in freezing pipe fracture

open access: yesDeep Underground Science and Engineering, EarlyView.
This research study employs analysis system (ANSYS) fluid–structure interaction simulations to investigate the generation and attenuation of vibration signals resulting from freezing pipe fractures in artificial ground freezing projects. By evaluating key variables—including frozen soil elastic modulus, brine inlet pressure, and external pipe pressure ...

Development of Earthquake Early Warning Systems in the European Union Early Warning for Geological Disasters

open access: yes, 2014
Utilization of Earthquake Early Warning Systems (EEWS) in Europe is lagging significantly in respect of pioneer applications in Japan and Mexico. The first reported implementation of a EEWS in Europe is the on-site system designed to protect the Ignalina
