Earthquakes, Strong-Ground Motion
2011Earthquake ground motion is a natural phenomenon associ- ated with a sudden release of energy due to a fault rupture. Strong-motion seismology deals with seismic waves radiated by large earthquakes. More precisely, it is concerned with measurement, interpretation and prediction of strong shaking generated by damaging earthquakes.

A Multiway Model for Predicting Earthquake Ground Motion
2013 14th ACIS International Conference on Software Engineering, Artificial Intelligence, Networking and Parallel/Distributed Computing, 2013This paper develops a novel supervised method for predicting earthquake ground motions in the wavelet domain. The training input is a set of seismological predictors related to seismic source, path and local site conditions, and the training output consists of the weights from a multiway analysis of ground motions.

Earthquake, Ground Motion, and Tsunamis
2016This chapter explains the roles of seismology and earthquake engineering for earthquake-resistant design of nuclear facilities. It also describes the various sources of earthquakes and the types of active faults. The propagation characteristics of S-waves among four kinds of seismic waves, and the reflection and transmission of S-waves at soil layer ...

Development of the portable ground motion simulator of an earthquake
2013 IEEE/RSJ International Conference on Intelligent Robots and Systems, 2013In recent decades, the devastating earthquakes, which can damage a lot of houses and buildings, have frequently happened. To slow down or prevent the disastrous damages of the earthquake, the various technologies have been required. Of these technologies, the ground motion simulator of the earthquake can be used to alert people to the dangers of the ...

CHAOTIC CHARACTERISTIC ANALYSIS OF STRONG EARTHQUAKE GROUND MOTIONS
International Journal of Bifurcation and Chaos, 2012This paper aims to analyze and understand the irregularity and complexity of earthquake ground motions from the perspective of nonlinear dynamics. Chaotic dynamics theory and chaotic time series analysis are suggested to examine the nonlinear dynamical characteristic of strong earthquake ground motions.

Ground Motions for Future Earthquakes
2020The time, location, and size of future earthquakes are uncertain. The ground motions produced by earthquakes of known magnitude and distance are also uncertain. This chapter discusses the uncertainty in future ground motions and the “acceptable” level of risk in seismic design.

Amplification of Earthquake Ground Motions by Surface Ground
2019This chapter introduces the amplification of seismic ground motion by surface ground. A calculation method for the amplification magnification of the acceleration due to surface grounds \( G_{s} \) is presented and a concrete calculation example is shown.

Stochastic nature of earthquake ground motion
Physica A: Statistical Mechanics and its Applications, 2013Abstract In this paper, we analyze the irregular behavior of earthquake ground motion as recorded during the Kraljevo M5.4 earthquake, which occurred on November 3rd, 2010 in Serbia. We perform the analysis for the ground accelerations recorded at 6 seismological stations: Grua, Ruda, Rada, Bara, Zaga and Bdva.

The Nature of Earthquake Ground Motion
1989The aim of this chapter is to provide a basic understanding about earthquakes, their world-wide distribution, what causes them, their likely damage mechanisms, earthquake measuring scales, and current efforts on the prediction of strong seismic ground motions. This chapter, therefore, furnishes the basic information necessary for understanding the more

Representation of Earthquake Ground Motions
2016It is noted that the most important parameters of an earthquake ground motions are its maximum motion, predominant period and effective durations [1]. However, different from other loadings, earthquake induced loading and ground motion cherish high uncertainties in these aspects, as well as, more broadly, on its occurrence, magnitude, frequency content
