Arma models for earthquake ground motions
Earthquake Engineering & Structural Dynamics, 1982AbstractThis paper outlines the use of discrete, autoregressive/moving‐average (ARMA) models for identification and estimation of parameters in models derived from analysis of uniformly digitized earthquake ground motion acceleration data. Such models are of equal generality as compared to continuous‐time models and have a number of significant ...

Ground Motions from Past Earthquakes
2020During earthquakes, the ground shakes in all three directions. The inertia of freestanding structures, such as buildings, bridges, and dams, prevents them from moving in unison with the ground. As a result, structures deform and develop stresses. This chapter discusses the ground motion characteristics which affect the response of structures.

Earthquake Ground Motion and Response Spectra
2001This chapter surveys the state-of-the-art work in strong motion seismology and ground motion characterization. Methods of ground motion recording and correction are first presented, followed by a discussion of ground motion characteristics including peak ground motion, duration of strong motion, and frequency content.

The Strongest Possible Earthquake Ground Motion
Journal of Earthquake Engineering, 2019Ground accelerations have been seen to exceed three accelerations of gravity (g). Can extreme motions further surpass this level as more earthquakes are experienced?

Propagation of Earthquake Waves in the Ground and Fundamentals of Earthquake Motion
2014Fundamental knowledge on the amplification and the attenuation of the earthquake waves, which is necessary to understand the wave propagation in the ground, is introduced in this chapter.

Investigation of strong earthquake ground motion
1969The pattern of energy release during the Imperial Valley, California, earthquake of 1940 is studied by analysing the El Centro strong motion seismograph record and records from the Tinemaha seismograph station, 546 km from the epicenter. The earthquake was a multiple event sequence with at least 4 events recorded at El Centro in the first 25 seconds ...
