Teleseismic estimates of the energy radiated by shallow earthquakes

Journal of Geophysical Research: Solid Earth, 1986
The energy flux contained in the P‐wave groups (P + pP + sP) or the S‐wave groups (S + pS + sS) radiated by a shallow earthquake is modeled assuming that the energy flux in the direct and depth phases adds incoherently. By defining generalized radiation patterns which incorporate this neutral interference, the wave groups are analyzed as though they ...

Earthquakes: Radiated Energy and the Physics of Faulting

2006
Earthquakes: Radiated Energy and the Physics of Faulting is the first book to present a systematic approach to understanding the energy changes associated with earthquakes. Solid Earth scientists, researchers and students -- especially those who work in seismology, tectonophysics, rock mechanics and geodesy -- will find this book an essential resource,

Numerical Study on Earthquake Energy Partitioning: Relationships Among Radiated Energy, Seismic Moment, and Stress Drop

Journal of Geophysical Research: Solid Earth, 2020
AbstractThis paper aims at mechanistically studying some aspects of earthquake energy partitioning with a focus on the radiated energy (Es) and seismic moment (Mo) relationships for investigating differences between estimates of average dynamic stress drop ( ) and static stress drop ( ).

Dynamic wedge failure reveals anomalous energy radiation of shallow subduction earthquakes

Earth and Planetary Science Letters, 2013
Abstract Dynamically induced Coulomb failure in the overriding wedge significantly affects energy radiation of shallow subduction earthquakes. For a wedge on the verge of failure, extensive fluid-assisted coseismic failure due to updip rupture causes significant seafloor uplift above a shallow dipping basal fault.

Radiated Energy of Great Earthquakes from Teleseismic Empirical Green’s Function Deconvolution

Pure and Applied Geophysics, 2014
We expand on the empirical Green’s function deconvolution method of Ide et al. (2011) to estimate radiated energy for the six largest earthquakes worldwide over the last 10 years: 2011 M w 9.0 Tohoku-Oki, 2004 M w 9.1 Sumatra, 2010 M w 8.8 Maule, 2005 M w 8.7 Nias, 2007 M

Spatial distribution of radiated seismic energy from earthquakes in Taiwan and surrounding regions

Journal of Asian Earth Sciences, 2020
Abstract The radiated energy during earthquakes is one of the essential characteristics that have a significant impact on human lives. The study of the released energy during earthquakes and their distribution may provide a detailed knowledge about the driving forces.

Laboratory-Based Maximum Slip Rates in Earthquake Rupture Zones and Radiated Energy

Bulletin of the Seismological Society of America, 2010
Laboratory stick-slip friction experiments indicate that peak slip rates increase with the stresses loading the fault to cause rupture. If this applies also to earthquake fault zones, then the analysis of rupture processes is simplified inasmuch as the slip rates depend only on the local yield stress and are independent of factors specific to a ...

Estimation of Radiated Energy of Finite-Source Earthquake Models

Bulletin of the Seismological Society of America, 2002
We estimated seismically radiated energy for kinematic earthquake rupture models. Instead of integrating far-field waveforms, we used an expression for radiated energy with slip and stress on the fault plane. Using an analytic crack model of Sato and Hirasawa (1973), we show that the finite-difference method can estimate the radiated energy fairly well;
