The seismic spectrum, radiated energy, and the Savage and Wood inequality for complex earthquakes
Tectonophysics, 1991Abstract We have integrated velocity squared spectra in order to determine the seismic energy radiated during fault rupture. The high frequency spectral fall-off and the shape of the spectrum at the corner frequency are critical to the energy calculation.

Estimation of Radiated Energy of Finite-Source Earthquake Models
Bulletin of the Seismological Society of America, 2002We estimated seismically radiated energy for kinematic earthquake rupture models. Instead of integrating far-field waveforms, we used an expression for radiated energy with slip and stress on the fault plane. Using an analytic crack model of Sato and Hirasawa (1973), we show that the finite-difference method can estimate the radiated energy fairly well;

We examine two closely located earthquakes in Japan that had identical moment magnitudes M w but significantly different energy magnitudes M e . We use teleseismic data from the Global Seismograph Network and strong-motion data from the National Research Institute for Earth Science and Disaster Prevention’s K-Net to analyze the 19 October 1996 Kyushu ...

AbstractThis paper aims at mechanistically studying some aspects of earthquake energy partitioning with a focus on the radiated energy (Es) and seismic moment (Mo) relationships for investigating differences between estimates of average dynamic stress drop ( ) and static stress drop ( ).

While classic double-couple earthquake models explain seismic wavefields accurately at low frequencies, at higher frequencies, seismic radiation exhibits significantly more complex and stochastic characteristics. Various on-fault and off-fault mechanisms

Dynamic wedge failure reveals anomalous energy radiation of shallow subduction earthquakes
Earth and Planetary Science Letters, 2013Abstract Dynamically induced Coulomb failure in the overriding wedge significantly affects energy radiation of shallow subduction earthquakes. For a wedge on the verge of failure, extensive fluid-assisted coseismic failure due to updip rupture causes significant seafloor uplift above a shallow dipping basal fault.

We estimated the seismic energy radiated by 47 earthquakes located near the faults that rupture during the 3 May 1887 Mw 7.5 Sonora earthquake in the Mexican Basin and Range Province. We retrieve source parameters from seismograms recorded by the local network RESNES (Red Sismica del Noreste de Sonora) that operated from 2003 to 2011, using a spectral ...

Laboratory-Based Maximum Slip Rates in Earthquake Rupture Zones and Radiated Energy
Bulletin of the Seismological Society of America, 2010Laboratory stick-slip friction experiments indicate that peak slip rates increase with the stresses loading the fault to cause rupture. If this applies also to earthquake fault zones, then the analysis of rupture processes is simplified inasmuch as the slip rates depend only on the local yield stress and are independent of factors specific to a ...

Seismicity Rate and Radiated Energy of Earthquakes in Parts of the African Plate
Pakistan Journal of Scientific & Industrial Research Series A: Physical SciencesThe occurrence of earthquakes and radiated energy in parts of the African plate were evaluated. The data for this study were extracted from the International Seismological Centre (ISC) earthquake catalogue. The data were analysed using seismicity rate, radiated energy model and Gutenberg - Richter's relationship. The findings of the study revealed that

Far-field radiated energy scaling in elastodynamic earthquake fault models
Bulletin of the Seismological Society of America, 1998AbstractMeasurements of the far-field radiated energy in very simple elastodynamic fault models is presented, and the scaling of the radiated energy with moment and rupture length is examined. The models produce a complex sequence of events having a wide range of sizes as a result of a frictional-weakening instability.
