Himalayan Surface Rupturing Earthquakes

2023
The Himalayan range is affected by very strong, devastating earthquakes that have been mentioned in historical chronicles on numerous occasions since the medieval period. Strong devastating earthquakes affect the entire Himalayan range. These earthquakes result from plate tectonics, and more specifically from the India–Asia convergence.

Geotechnical Mitigation Strategies for Earthquake Surface Fault Rupture

Journal of Geotechnical and Geoenvironmental Engineering, 2013
AbstractSurface fault rupture can be damaging to structures built on or near active faults if the hazard is not addressed properly. Fault-induced angular distortion and lateral ground strain can cause beams to yield and eventually lead to structural collapse. When avoidance is not possible, geotechnical mitigation strategies can be used.

ACES field guide: surface ruptures of the 2016 Kaikōura earthquake

2023
The 2016 November 14 Kaikōura MW 7.8 earthquake occurred in the northern South Island of New Zealand, rupturing several faults of the Marlborough Fault System … The Marlborough Fault System accommodates 35–40 mm/year of relative motion between the Pacific and Australian plates (Beavan et al. 2002).

Surface Rupturing Earthquakes of the Greater Caucasus Frontal Thrusts, Azerbaijan

2022
Quaternary convergence at rates of ~10 mm/yr between the Arabian and Eurasian plates is largely accommodated by the Kura fold-thrust belt at the longitude of the Greater Caucasus Mountains in Azerbaijan and eastern Georgia. Here we present the results of the first paleoseismic study of the Kura fold-thrust belt in Azerbaijan.

Numerical Study of Ground-Motion Differences between Buried-Rupturing and Surface-Rupturing Earthquakes

Bulletin of the Seismological Society of America, 2009
Recent ground-motion observations suggest that surface-rupturing earth- quakes generate weaker near-fault ground motion than buried earthquakes. This dif- ference is significant in the period range of 0.3-3 sec. Contributing factors to this phenomenon may include the effect of fault zone weakness at shallow depth on rup- ture dynamics and rupture ...

Primary surface ruptures of the great Himalayan earthquakes in 1934 and 1255

Nature Geoscience, 2012
It is unclear where plate boundary thrusts generate giant rather than great earthquakes. Along the Himalayas, the source sizes and recurrence times of large seismic events are particularly uncertain, since no surface signatures were found for those that shook the range in the twentieth century. Here we challenge the consensus that these events remained

Surface Rupture Effects on Earthquake Moment-Area Scaling Relations

Pure and Applied Geophysics, 2017
Empirical earthquake scaling relations play a central role in fundamental studies of earthquake physics and in current practice of earthquake hazard assessment, and are being refined by advances in earthquake source analysis. A scaling relation between seismic moment (M0) and rupture area (A) currently in use for ground motion prediction in Japan ...

A numerical approach for estimating the probability of earthquake surface rupture

This study is part of the Probabilistic Fault Displacement Hazard Analysis (PFDHA) framework, which assesses the hazard posed by coseismic surface faulting to infrastructure systems (e.g., lifelines, nuclear power plants, and dams) located on or near an earthquake fault trace.

Designing Buildings to Accommodate Earthquake Surface Fault Rupture

Improving the Seismic Performance of Existing Buildings and Other Structures, 2009
Recent earthquakes have provided several examples of the devastating effects of earthquake surface fault rupture on buildings. Numerous examples of satisfactory performance of buildings have also been observed. These examples of satisfactory performance indicate that similar to other forms of ground movement, effective design strategies can be ...

Displacement and Geometrical Characteristics of Earthquake Surface Ruptures: Issues and Implications for Seismic-Hazard Analysis and the Process of Earthquake Rupture

Bulletin of the Seismological Society of America, 2008
There now exist about three dozen historical earthquakes for which in- vestigators have constructed maps of earthquake rupture traces accompanied by de- scriptions of the coseismic slip observed along the fault strike. The maps and slip distributions are compiled here to place observational bounds on aspects of seismic- hazard analysis and fault ...
