Surface ruptures of the Iranian earthquakes 1900–2014: Insights for earthquake fault rupture hazards and empirical relationships

Earth-Science Reviews, 2016
Abstract A database of Iranian earthquakes during the instrumental period (1900–2014) is used to analyze geometric and kinematic aspects of the surface ruptures in different seismotectonic regions of the country. Majority of the ruptures have occurred along or associated with known geological or active faults.

Do buried-rupture earthquakes trigger less landslides than surface-rupture earthquakes for reverse faults?

Geomorphology, 2014
Abstract Gorum et al. (2013, Geomorphology 184, 127–138) carried out a study on inventory compilation and statistical analyses of landslides triggered by the 2010 Mw 7.0 Haiti earthquake. They revealed that spatial distribution patterns of these landslides were mainly controlled by complex rupture mechanism and topography.

Surface Rupture of the 1857 Southern Italian Earthquake?

Terra Nova, 1998
In October 1862, Robert Mallet published an extensive study of a large earthquake that occurred on 16 December 1857, 150 km south‐east of Naples. This event is one of the most destructive ever recorded in Italy. Although continental earthquakes of similar size are almost invariably associated with surface faulting, Mallet did not identify any surface ...

Earthquake Surface Ruptures

2010
The Wenchuan earthquake produced surface ruptures with the most complicated structures and the greatest length as compared with the intra-plate reverse faulting earthquakes that have ever been reported so far (Xu et al., 2008a). The earthquake ruptured simultaneously both the NE-trending, NW-dipping Beichuan and Pengguan faults with right-slip ...
