A Simple Discrete Elastic Model Exhibits Both the Statistical Properties and Migration Patterns of Slow Slip

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Solid Earth, Volume 131, Issue 10, October 2026.
Abstract More than 20 years after their discovery, the physical mechanisms of slow earthquakes remain enigmatic. Here, we develop a simple quasi‐static elastic model that reproduces both the migration patterns of elastic/frictional models, and the statistical properties of Brownian models.

Tectonic Model of the 2021 Haiti Earthquake Based on a Newly‐Formed Strike‐Slip Bypass Fault Across a Paired Restraining‐Releasing Bend

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Solid Earth, Volume 131, Issue 10, October 2026.
Abstract On 14 August 2021, the southern peninsula of Haiti was struck by an Mw 7.2 earthquake that killed more than 2,200 people. The 2021 epicenter is located 95 km west of the Mw 7.0 2010 Haiti earthquake and 7 km north of the main, geomorphic trace of the EW‐striking, left‐lateral strike‐slip Enriquillo‐Plantain Garden fault zone (EPGFZ) that forms

Evolution of Scaled Energy During Earthquake Ruptures

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Solid Earth, Volume 131, Issue 10, October 2026.
Abstract Earthquake ruptures radiate seismic energy in complex ways, reflecting the interplay of fault heterogeneity and rupture dynamics. How the radiated energy evolves during rupture, and whether this evolution varies systematically with earthquake properties, remains poorly understood. Here we analyze more than 1,500 global earthquakes using moment‐

Combining Borehole Seismic Data and Deep‐Learning Methods to Monitor Seismic Sequences in the Istanbul‐Marmara Region, NW Türkiye

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Solid Earth, Volume 131, Issue 10, October 2026.
Abstract The North Anatolian Fault Zone beneath the Sea of Marmara in NW Türkiye displays a 50% probability of an M≥7 $\mathrm{M}\ge 7$ earthquake within the next decades. The proximity of the fault to the Istanbul megalopolis highlights the need for high‐resolution microseismicity monitoring to identify seismicity transients including pre‐mainshock ...

Effects of Bulk Poroelasticity on Repeating Earthquake Sequences: Insights From Numerical Modeling

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Solid Earth, Volume 131, Issue 10, October 2026.
Abstract At seismogenic depths, faults and the surrounding rock are saturated with water. Fault slip induces volumetric strains in the bulk, causing compression or dilation of pore fluid, which alters pore pressure—a phenomenon known as the poroelastic effect. This pore pressure change can, in turn, influence fault slip behavior.
