The East Asian summer monsoon: an overview
Meteorology and Atmospheric Physics, 2005The present paper provides an overview of major problems of the East Asian summer monsoon. The summer monsoon system over East Asia (including the South China Sea (SCS)) cannot be just thought of as the eastward and northward extension of the Indian monsoon.

The interannual variability of East Asian Winter Monsoon and its relation to the summer monsoon
Based on the NCEP/ NCAR reanalysis data the interannual variability of the East Asian winter mon-soon (EAWM) is studied with a newly defined EAWM intensity index. The marked features for a strong (weak) winter monsoon include strong (weak) northerly winds along coastal East Asia, cold (warm) East Asian continent and surrounding sea and warm (cold ...

Roles of ENSO in the Link of the East Asian Summer Monsoon to the Ensuing Winter Monsoon
Journal of Geophysical Research D: Atmospheres, 2021AbstractThe link between the East Asian summer monsoon (EASM) and the ensuing East Asian winter monsoon (EAWM) is investigated. The results found that strong (weak) EASM years are often followed by the strong (weak) EAWM years, demonstrating that the in‐phase EASM to EAWM transition dominate the EASM‐EAWM link.

AbstractThis study investigates the interdecadal variability (IDV) of the interface between the Indian summer monsoon and the East Asian summer monsoon (IIE). Results suggest that the IDV of the IIE is characterized by a uniform zonal movement associated with seesaw variations between the Indian summer monsoon (ISM) and the East Asian summer monsoon ...

Astronomical and glacial forcing of East Asian summer monsoon variability
The dynamics of glacialeinterglacial monsoon variability can be attributed to orbitally induced changes in summer insolation and internal boundary conditions. However, the relative impacts of astronomical and internal factors on East Asian summer monsoon

Relationship between East Asian winter monsoon and summer monsoon
Advances in Atmospheric Sciences, 2011Using National Centers for Environmental Prediction/National Centre for Atmospheric Research (NCEP/NCAR) reanalysis data and monthly Hadley Center sea surface temperature (SST) data, and selecting a representative East Asian winter monsoon (EAWM) index, this study investigated the relationship between EAWM and East Asian summer monsoon (EASM) using ...

Forcing the East Asian summer monsoon
Science, 2018Paleoclimate What factors have controlled the intensity of the East Asian summer monsoon over the recent geological past? To answer this key question requires a robust proxy for rainfall amounts. Beck et al. measured the beryllium isotopic content of loess from China, from which they reconstructed a 550,000-year-long record of rainfall.

The variability of the East Asian winter monsoon (EAWM) can be divided into an ENSO-related part (EAWMEN) and an ENSO-unrelated part (EAWMres). The influence of EAWMres on the ENSO-East Asian summer monsoon (EASM) relationship in the decaying stages of ENSO is investigated in the present study. To achieve this, ENSO is divided into four groups based on

In this study, the summer rainfall patterns in the East China monsoon region during 1951–2015 were objectively classified into four typical categories: the northern China rainfall pattern (NCP), the intermediate rainfall pattern (IRP), the Yangtze River rainfall pattern (YRP), and the South China rainfall pattern (SCP). The periods of the four patterns

How to Measure the Strength of the East Asian Summer Monsoon
Journal of Climate, 2008Abstract Defining the intensity of the East Asian summer monsoon (EASM) has been extremely controversial. This paper elaborates on the meanings of 25 existing EASM indices in terms of two observed major modes of interannual variation in the precipitation and circulation anomalies for the 1979–2006 period.
