Complicated EBV infection in a healthy child

BMJ Case Reports, 2021
The Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) is highly prevalent throughout the population. Although in most cases, the infection has a good prognosis, it can cause severe complications. We report a case of a healthy child with a primary EBV infection that evolved with two rare complications.

To EBV or not to EBV: Rational vaccine design for a common infection

Science Immunology, 2018
A human antibody that prevents EBV infection is identified by studying memory B cells that recognize core EBV fusion proteins.

EBV lytic infection enhances transformation of B‐lymphocytes infected with EBV in the presence of T‐lymphocytes

Journal of Medical Virology, 2012
AbstractEpstein–Barr virus (EBV) establishes lifelong latency in B‐lymphocytes following infection. Although in immune‐competent individuals EBV remains in a quiescent state, in immunodeficient individuals, such as those with AIDS or transplant recipients, B‐lymphocytes infected with EBV proliferate to give rise to lymphoproliferative diseases ...

Role of EBERs in the Pathogenesis of EBV Infection

2010
Epstein-Barr virus (EBV)-encoded small RNAs (EBERs) are noncoding RNAs that are expressed abundantly in latently EBV-infected cells. Previous studies demonstrated that EBERs (EBER1 and EBER2) play significant roles in various EBV-infected cancer cells. EBERs are responsible for malignant phenotypes of Burkitt's lymphoma (BL) cells including resistance ...

Circulating Interferon in EBV Infections

1987
Interferon (IFN) is known to be synthesized in viral infections as an important defense mechanism (1). Our data report IFN determination in two groups of patients: one group with acute infections (influenza, enterovirus infections), and another group with different expressions of EBV infections [primary infection, “active infection” and nasopharyngeal ...

Circulating EBV-DNA in the monitoring of EBV infection in pediatric liver transplant recipients

Transplantation Proceedings, 2001
Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) infection can induce uncontrolled lymphocyte B proliferation in immunosuppressed transplant recipients. The risk of developing EBV-related posttransplant lymphoproliferative disease (PTLD) is particularly high in children who contract primary EBV infection after transplantation.1 The incidence of PTLD in the pediatric ...

Therapeutic potential of EBV infection

Science Signaling, 2020
Targeting MYC or factors that sustain its expression may turn EBV infection into a therapeutic tool for B cell lymphomas.

EBV Infection and Glucose Metabolism in Nasopharyngeal Carcinoma

2017
To establish persistent infection in cells, viruses evolve strategies to alter host cellular pathways to regulate cell proliferation and energy metabolism which support viral infection. Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) undergoes both lytic and latent infection to achieve persistent and lifelong infection in human.

Association of EBV infection with lymphomas.

Acta microbiologica Polonica, 2004
The diagnostic reliability of the IgA immunoblot test in the diagnosis of EBV associated lymphomas was examined. Serum samples from patients with clinically diagnosed lymphomas were tested for the presence of EBV specific IgG and IgA antibodies and based on test results the EBV association with lymphoma was estimated.
