Echinococcosis is a near-cosmopolitan zoonosis caused by adult or larval stages of cestodes belonging to the genus Echinococcus (family Taeniidae). The two major species of medical and public health importance are Echinococcus granulosus and Echinococcus multilocularis, which cause cystic echinococcosis and alveolar echinococcosis, respectively.

A case of renal echinococcosis, most uncommon in Hungary, is reported. The problems of diagnosis and therapy are discussed. It is emphasized that difficulties of diagnosis, particularly differential diagnosis, arise mainly in countries where the incidence of echinococcosis is low.

Early and accurate diagnosis of echinococcosis of the heart is of great importance. Surgical treatment is indicated as rupture of the cyst either to the heart chambers or to the pericardial cavity may have serious complications or a fatal outcome. Diagnosis is based on the chest x-ray picture in association with the Casoni skin test, Weinberg's test ...

Echinococcosis, also known as hydatid disease, is an infection of larval stage animal tapeworm, Echinococcus. The larvae reside in the liver and lungs, producing multiloculated fluid-filled cysts. Imaging findings of Echinococcosis caused by E. granulosus are single, unilocular cyst or multiseptated cysts, showing "wheel-like", "rosette-like" or ...

Epidemiology of echinococcosis
Langenbeck's Archives of Surgery, 2003Various species and infraspecific forms of the cestode genus Echinococcus are causative agents of human echinococcosis. Pathology, epidemiology and geographical occurrence vary widely between the different Echinococcus taxa. As a general rule, those forms of echinococcosis that are transmitted mainly by wild animals are rather rare, due to limited ...
