The Amateur and Eclipsing Binary Stars [PDF]
Probably no other branch of science has benefited as much from the work of dedicated amateurs as has the science of Astronomy. While some amateurs have made many useful types of astronomical observations– comets, meteors, occultations, etc. – perhaps none has been as extensive and as useful as those made in the field of variable stars.

Spectrophotometry of massive eclipsing binary stars
Normalized flux distributions were measured for U Ophiuchi, AG Persei, lambda Tauri, and V356 Sagitarii from 1976 July to 1978 March. The spectra of lambda Tauri match those of a B4 star and an A4 star at phases 0.77--9.90, and those of a B3 star and an A4 star at other phases.

The binary properties of the pulsating subdwarf B eclipsing binary PG 1336-018 (NY Virginis) [PDF]
Aims. We present an unbiased orbit solution and mass determination of the components of the eclipsing binary PG1336−018 as a critical test for the formation scenarios of subdwarf B stars. Methods. We obtained high-resolution time series VLT/UVES spectra

KEPLER ECLIPSING BINARY STARS. III. CLASSIFICATION OF KEPLER ECLIPSING BINARY LIGHT CURVES WITH LOCALLY LINEAR EMBEDDING [PDF]
We present an automated classification of 2165 Kepler eclipsing binary (EB) light curves that accompanied the second Kepler data release. The light curves are classified using locally linear embedding, a general nonlinear dimensionality reduction tool ...

An Opto‐Actuated Hydrogel for Cell Mechanoactuation and Real‐Time Force Monitoring
Researchers developed a mechanoactuated hydrogel interface where nanomachines exert forces on adhesion receptors and allow monitoring of traction force responses in real time. They demonstrate reversible talin recruitment, enhanced F‐actin polymerization, and a reduction in cell traction force when force is locally applied to focal adhesions of ...

Modelling of W UMa-type variable stars
W Ursae Majoris (W UMa)-type variable stars are over-contact eclipsing binary stars. To understand how these systems form and evolve requires observations spanning many years, followed by detailed models of as many of them as possible.

Variables in the Southern Polar Region Evryscope 2016 Dataset [PDF]
The regions around the celestial poles offer the ability to find and characterize long-term variables from ground-based observatories. We used multi-year Evryscope data to search for high-amplitude (~5% or greater) variable objects among 160,000 bright ...

A Trypsin‐Like Serine Protease ZmNAL1a Fine‐Tunes Maize Floral Transition and Flowering Time
This study identifies a trypsin‐like serine protease, ZmNAL1a, that moves from leaves to the shoot apical meristem. ZmNAL1a promotes the floral transition by degrading TOPLESS‐like corepressor REL2, which thereby enhances the expression of key flowering genes through elevating histone acetylation and relieving REL2–ZmEREBP147‐mediated transcriptional ...

Accurate fundamental parameters of eclipsing binary stars [PDF]
The study of detached eclipsing binaries is one of the most powerful ways to investigate the properties of individual stars and stellar systems. We present preliminary masses, radii and effective temperatures for the eclipsing binary WW Aurigae, which is composed of two metallic-lined A-type stars.

Search for Variable Stars in the Globular Cluster M3 [PDF]
We describe here results of a photometric time-sequence survey of the globular cluster M3 (NGC 5272), in a search for contact and detached eclipsing binary stars.
