Stakeholder Perspectives on the Design of First‐In‐Human Trials for Artificial Amnion and Placenta Technology: A Qualitative Study

open access: yesBJOG: An International Journal of Obstetrics &Gynaecology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Objective Artificial Amnion and Placenta Technology (AAPT), designed to improve outcomes in extreme prematurity, has shown promise in animal studies, with human trials anticipated soon. This study seeks to inform the responsible design of future trials by utilising insights from parents who experienced an (imminent) extremely premature birth ...

Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation: A review

open access: yesJournal of Pediatric Critical Care, 2017
Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) is used to support heart and lungs for extended periods of time till the underlying disease process is treated by use of a semi permeable membrane oxygenator .In 70s ECMO as a treatment modality in adult ...

Invasive pulmonary aspergillosis post extracorporeal membrane oxygenation support and literature review [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
The use of extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) for reversible pulmonary failure in critically ill patients has increased over the last few decades.

Simultaneous Ex Situ Normothermic Perfusion of Paired Kidneys in Pigs

open access: yesArtificial Organs, EarlyView.
This pig model of simultaneous perfusion of paired kidneys in normothermia suggests that intra‐individual variation is relatively low, enabling one kidney to be employed as a reliable comparator of the other kidney for assessing treatments before kidney transplantation.

Prognosis After Seven Days of Veno‐Venous Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation Support

open access: yesArtificial Organs, EarlyView.
The hospital survival rate of patients still on V‐V ECMO after seven days was 45.1%. Survival correlates with the respiratory situation on day seven defined as points scored above the favorability margin of survival. Day 7 may be too early to predict prognosis in V‐V ECMO.

Left ventricular unloading during veno-arterial ECMO: a review of percutaneous and surgical unloading interventions

open access: yesPerfusion, 2018
Short-term mechanical support by veno-arterial extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (VA ECMO) is more and more applied in patients with severe cardiogenic shock. A major shortcoming of VA ECMO is its variable, but inherent increase of left ventricular (LV)

Physiotherapy for ECMO patients

open access: yesThe Egyptian Journal of Critical Care Medicine, 2018
Abstract Physiotherapy is part of the overall care in an interdisciplinary intensive care unit. Patients on extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) were previously deemed to be too unstable to mobilise. Safety is of paramount importance as these patients often have multiple large cannulas, monitoring and lines.

Physiological Control of Realheart Total Artificial Heart

open access: yesArtificial Organs, EarlyView.
This study evaluates the Realheart Total Artificial Heart's preload‐based physiological controller, which dynamically adjusts heart rate and stroke volume to mimic the heart's natural responses during sleep, rest, and exercise using a hybrid mock circulation loop of the cardiovascular system.

New Findings on Pulsatile ECMO: Verification of the Potential to Improve Antithrombogenicity of a Membrane Oxygenator Using Pump‐Generated Pulsatile Flow in an Innovative Animal Model

open access: yesArtificial Organs, EarlyView.
Compared to the steady flow circuit, the pulse flow circuit showed a clear trend of less thrombus formation inside the membrane oxygenator. ABSTRACT Background Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) provides mechanical circulatory and respiratory support.
