Distinct Habitats Select Particular Bacterial Communities in Mangrove Sediments

open access: yesInternational Journal of Microbiology, 2016
We investigated the relationship among environmental variables, composition, and structure of bacterial communities in different habitats in a mangrove located nearby to an oil exploitation area, aiming to retrieve the natural pattern of bacterial ...

Life Cycle Plasticity of Colpoda aspera Fed With Petroleum Tolerant Gram-Positive and Gram-Negative Bacteria. [PDF]

open access: yesJ Eukaryot Microbiol
ABSTRACT Soil recovery after contamination relies on the surviving microbiota to reconstruct microbial food webs. The ciliate Colpoda aspera and Brevundimonas sp., Rhizobium sp1, Rhizobium sp2 (gram‐negative), Bacillus sp1, Bacillus sp2, and Microbacterium sp.(gram‐positive) remain active after pulses of light petroleum contamination.

Dominant marine heterotrophic flagellates are adapted to natural planktonic bacterial abundances

open access: yesEnvironmental Microbiology, Volume 24, Issue 5, Page 2421-2434, May 2022., 2022
Summary Grazing controls bacterial abundances and composition in many ecosystems. In marine systems, heterotrophic flagellates (HFs) are important predators. Assemblages of HFs are primarily formed by species still uncultured; therefore, many aspects of their trophic behaviour are poorly known.

Metagenomic strategies identify diverse integron‐integrase and antibiotic resistance genes in the Antarctic environment

open access: yesMicrobiologyOpen, Volume 10, Issue 5, October 2021., 2021
The objective of this study is to identify and analyze integrons and antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in samples collected from diverse sites in terrestrial Antarctica. The metagenomic analysis allowed us to identify novel predicted intI integrases and gene cassettes (GCs), which mostly encode unknown functions.

An unusual overrepresentation of genetic factors related to iron homeostasis in the genome of the fluorescent Pseudomonas sp. ABC1

open access: yesMicrobial Biotechnology, Volume 14, Issue 3, Page 1060-1072, May 2021., 2021
‘Pseudomonas chilensis’ strain ABC1 was fully sequenced. About 5% of the ABC1 genome is devoted to iron acquisition, including 37 ECF sigma factors. Strain ABC1 produces pyoverdine and has the genes for the production of yersiniabactin. Summary Members of the genus Pseudomonas inhabit diverse environments, such as soil, water, plants and humans.

Quantification and Determination of Compatible Bacterial Consortia. [PDF]

open access: yesMicrob Biotechnol
This study presents a mathematical model to identify compatible bacterial consortia by analysing antagonistic and coexistence relationships. Introducing the Bacterial Coexistence Index (BCI), it evaluates bacterial viability. The model identified 36,851 strain sets promoting plant growth, optimising bacterial consortium design for sustainable ...

Bacterioplankton response to nitrogen and dissolved organic matter produced from salmon mucus

open access: yesMicrobiologyOpen, Volume 9, Issue 12, December 2020., 2020
Salmon farming can modify ambient microbial community structure, including specific groups like marine nitrifying bacteria. Fish mucus represents an additional source of dissolved organic matter and nutrients to the water column. There is a rapid response of fjord free‐living microbial community to mucus addition.

Conversion of Andean montane forests into plantations: Effects on soil characteristics, microorganisms, and microarthropods

open access: yesBiotropica, Volume 52, Issue 6, Page 1142-1154, November 2020., 2020
Abstract Tropical montane forests in the Andes are subjected to deforestation and subsequent transformation into pastures. Abandoned pastures are frequently reforested by planting monoculture timber plantations, resulting in reduced aboveground diversity and changes in soil characteristics compared to primary forests.
