The Wine Quality of Merlot Relies in Irrigation Supplementation and Spotlights Sustainable Production Constraints in Mediterranean-Type Ecosystems

open access: yesAustralian Journal of Grape and Wine Research
Background and Aims. The Mediterranean climate has been traditionally favorable for winemaking and irrigation practice has been historically avoided and even forbidden, but current productive scenarios are suffering radical changes because of global ...

Tandem Duplication‐Driven Neofunctionalization of UDP‐Glycosyltransferases Shapes the Diversification of Triterpenoid Saponins in the Cucurbitaceae

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
We present a chromosome‐level genome assembly of Siraitia grosvenorii and, through comparative genomics, uncover a conserved UGT73 tandem array driving triterpenoid saponin diversification in Cucurbitaceae. Crystalized SgUGT73AM30 further reveals the regioselectivity mechanism underlying its catalytic activity.

Evolutionary Ecology of Plant-Microbe Interactions in Urban Environments

open access: yes
Urbanization is a dominant driver of environmental change that frequently alters the ecological setting of ecosystems. Determining how urban-driven environmental change alters the ecological and evolutionary dynamics of species interactions is important ...

Species concepts should not conflict with evolutionary history, but often do [PDF]

open access: yes, 2008
Many phylogenetic systematists have criticized the Biological Species Concept (BSC) because it distorts evolutionary history. While defenses against this particular criticism have been attempted, I argue that these responses are unsuccessful. In addition,

Stromal Regulation of Tumor Perineural Invasion: A Multicellular and Neuro‐Ecological Perspective

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
This review reframes perineural invasion (PNI) as a dynamic, multicellular process within the tumor–nerve–stromal ecosystem. The authors delineate how cancer‐associated fibroblasts, Schwann cells, and immune cells remodel the neural niche to facilitate tumor spread.
