What are Ecosystem Services and Natural Capital, and how does this apply to Soil Science? [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
Ecosystem services and natural capital have become prominent terminology in the ecological and wider literature, and yet convey different meanings to different communities.

The Water Accounting Data Ecosystem

open access: yes, 2021
Water is behind every aspect of our lives. It is directly in the water we drink, indirectly in the food we eat, and inherent in the supply chain processes that deliver the goods and services we purchase.

Sulfated Cyclocarya Paliurus Polysaccharide Sorchestrates the Gut Microbiome to Mobilize a Host‐Derived 12‐HEPE Against Ulcerative Colitis

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
A sulfated polysaccharide (SCP) from Cyclocarya paliurus alleviates ulcerative colitis by reshaping the gut microbiome. This remodeled microbiota orchestrates the upregulation of the host‐derived lipid 12‐HEPE, which directly inhibits the TLR4/NF‐κB pathway to suppress inflammation.

Tumor‐Infiltrating mregDCs Restrain Anti‐Tumor Immunity in Early Relapse HCC

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Tumor‐infiltrating mregDCs are regulated by the TNFR2‐non‐canonical NF‐κB axis, which is mediated by TNF‐α secreted by CD161+CD8+ T cells. These mregDCs recruit CD161+CD8+ T cells via the CCL20‐CCR6 axis, forming a positive feedback loop that enhances immunosuppression, promotes early recurrence of HCC, and further confirms TNFR2 as a key therapeutic ...

The Non-Market Benefits of Nature: What Should Be Counted in Green GDP? [PDF]

open access: yes
Green gross domestic product (green GDP) is meant to account for nature’s value on an equal footing with the market economy. Several problems bedevil green GDP, however.

Extra Climate Benefits From Afforestation Due to Reduced Forest Fragmentation in China

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Afforestation in China reduced forest fragmentation in 2015, transforming 51.8 M ha of edge forests into interior forests. This enhanced carbon sequestration (1.4±0.2 Pg CO2e, a cooling biogeochemical effect), while reduced albedo (−0.9 Pg CO2e, a warming biophysical effect) partially offset the gain, yielding a net extra climate benefit of ...

Towards Distributional Ecosystem Accounts

open access: yesEnvironmental and Resource Economics
Natural capital is an important source of wealth and income, but these assets and corresponding benefits of ecosystem services are not necessarily equally distributed within countries. This paper develops a framework to systematically record the distribution of ecosystem service benefits and nature dependencies in the population by integrating the UN ...
